would do?

Since odds are the carrier might soon be disabled or vaporized, do you
get every air asset in the air ASAP in a use it or lose it situation?
Or do you have everything on standby fueled, armed and ready to launch?
Do you group the ships closer together or use more separation?

What percentage of a modern carriers planes are normally ready to go?
How long would it take to get every flyable plane off the deck?
With a normal airborne tanker complement, how many planes could you keep
in the air as long as possible?


What tactics and weapons would then be used against any possible enemies
either in the air, water, or underwater? Do U.S. fast attack subs
normally cruise with a carrier battle group?

That depends on when this scenario takes place. During the Cold War,
carriers were part of SIOP, so the A-6Es would be loaded with nuclear
weapons and sent off to bomb somebody.

Today, carriers have no such role or weapons. All actions would be
defensive in nature.

The same tactics and weapons that would always be used, but with more
liberal rules of engagement.

You take the CBG and run for blue water.

In its a surprise and you're in port, you cut the anchor chain and go with
what you got. You go even if its with nothing but the carrier, what crew and
aircraft are on board. Let the rest (crew members, escorts, and aircraft)
catch up as they can. The carrier can defend itself for the short term, and
at the very high speed which it will be at, carrier air assets can do a
better job than the escorts. But the escorts will have to catch up soon as
everything will be needed to protect the carrier.

Once you have room to maneuver you are pretty safe from ICBM's and IRBM's
launched from shore. You are also in a much better position to defend
against air attacks from land bases. (Today they are about the only way you
will be attacked by air).

Your biggest danger is from weapons fired at you from shorter range. Low
flying cruise missiles, short range attack missiles, torpedoes etc. launched
from subs, small patrol boats, and low flying aircraft. There is less time
to detect and react to them.
