Most picture editors, PsP, Photoshop et al, have some form of edge
detecting selector. Usually as part of the freehand selection tool,
it selects along the hard edge between (for example) the red fuselage spine
and the background behind the plane.

Carry on to select the whole object, in my case the PC9. Once that's
done, invert the selection, so that everything - but - the PC9 is
selected. Whatever effect you apply to the picture is then only
applied to the background, I chose the 'weave' effect, but 'contours' and
'topography' are also fun to play with.

I do photoshop but what you did looked kinda special - that's whay I asked.
