Can somebody explain something to me here? I'm assuming from this one that
it's the guy in the front seat who's doing the driving. But in #8, the guy
in the front seat appears to be doing a double thumbs-up. With his hands
off the stick?

No big mystery involved here, Neil. This airplane is a trainer, so it's
fitted with double controls. You can fly this particular Hawk from both
seats.

In #8 the instructor was demonstrating how to negotiate the valleys and the
student was showing off.
In #9 [five minutes later] the same aircraft comes back around and now the
student has both hands on the stick with the instructor waving.
