Question from a new flight student (whopping 7 hours!)

I was looking at the AOPA airport info.

ANP and W29 don't list AWOS or ATIS freqs.

That seems pretty critical.

So - where does one download "better" info so you can get local weather

freqs?

Maybe there is an "official" site? FAA?

I use a combination of things. Even if AWOS is available it's not
always accurate. Outdated equipment, malfunctioning equipment, or
just plan equipment limitations all happen. (The latter more of the
time than the former two.)

I want to get a good picture of the weather situation in general. I
use www.weather.gov, especially the sites http://aviationweather.gov/
and http://adds.aviationweather.gov/. I especially follow the prog
charts, satellite pictures, and radar (depending on when in the future
I'm looking). Then, when I get METAR or TAF, I can put it in the
context of a larger picture and make more sense of it.

With some work at it you'll get a feel for things, it'll come.

Gary, don't fly if it's raining, snowing, or fogging. Don't fly if the
cloud cover is down around 2,000 feet.

If it's dry and you're well clear of the clouds, and you still feel
nervous, then stay in the pattern.

You can always ask the weather briefer about the weather,
1.800.WXBRIEF. He'll tell you more than you ever wanted to know.
