View Full Version : Jet Fighter Ride

Well I turn the big 50 Wednesday, the plus side is that my wife has
agreed to fund one wild adventure. First, I thought sky diving, then
after a bad dream, I decided if you can fly a plane why jump out!

So my second choice was to try a find a ride in a jet fighter! There is
one about 50 miles away but I have been unable to track down the owner.
So I am now turning to you all! Is there anyone in the PA or Lower NY
area the has a T38 or even a L29 or 39 that would like to give an old
USAF Flight Sim guy a ride. I have many hours in C5, C141, F4, T38 and
T33 flight sim's, but would give my right arm for an hour in the real
thing.

If anyone can help let me know!

Check with the Collings Foundation at http://www.collingsfoundation.org .
They have a restored F4-D that I would give my left ... for a ride in.
I believe they have a Texan that might instrest you.

FWIW, the T-38 is the nicest looking jet fighter. I really like the
T-38-on-a-stick at the entrance to Maxwell AFB.

How 'bout New Jersey? Dave Sutton offers rides in a Fouga Magister.

There's also an L-39 down at South Jersey Regional, but I don't know what they
do with it.

I agree, that is one beautiful machine, but it ain't a fighter. It's a trainer.

One of the Collings Foundation F-4D Phantom II mantenance crew chiefs, Rick
Harris, is a member of the F4Discussion group on Yahoo. He says the act of
Congress that forced the USAF to allow them to have possession of the F-4
also prohibits them from selling rides. The USAF is NOT happy about them
having the aircraft, and the Demil people in charge of making sure current
static displays given to civilian museums will never fly again tried
several times to take back the F-4D while the Collings people were getting
it ready to fly at Davis-Monthan. Collings also was given a TA-4J Skyhawk
by Congress, and the demil folks put up several roadblocks to flying that
aircraft too. I'm not sure if Collings has been able to get that one up and
flying yet.
Another thing you might consider is a trip to Russia to fly a MiG. There
are a couple of tourist agencies as I recall that offer all-included
packages to go to Moscow and fly the MiG of your choice, up to and
including the Su-27 or MiG-25. The prices weren't too out-of-this world,
but a lot more than I'll ever be able to afford. Perhaps you could swing
it though.

Well, if I'm gonna pay what that ride is likely to cost, I wanna blow something
up. Where are the rockets?

Not to mention, the weaponry.

The irony of course will be in 30 odd years time, when we have the
full-on Cold War warbird displays with 70s and 80s jet fighters at
airshows - there will be very few US planes. They will all be Soviet!
(Or British - there's quite a few Hawker Hunters, Buccaneers, Lightnings
etc. still flying).

There's at least one MiG-21 at Galveston in Texas (it was being worked
on with the intention of flight when I was based there), and at least a
couple of MiG-17s in the Houston area. Unfortunately, I think they are
all single seat.

If you want a real kick in the pants, there's at least a couple of
English Electric Lightnings (Cold war era interceptors) flying and
giving rides in South Africa. The Lightning has incredible climb
performance. I think there's also a couple of Buccaneers flying in South
Africa, too.

Checked it out, looks like B17's and 24's. They are next on my want list!

Russia is way out of range for me, thanks! I hope to find something with out
the travel cost.

That's a possibility!! Have the site bookmarked. I've been into S. Jersey several
times I check with the shop there and see if they have any info on the L39,
Thanks!

Little further away than PA or NY but hell you'll only be 50 once.

I saw a story on this place on one of the Discovery or Discovery like
networks. It looked like the guy really took care of the aircraft and
regularly went out for evening flights for the fun of it. He obviously has
more money than God, but they never mentioned where that money came from. My
first thought was he was an arms dealer. Not that there's anything wrong
with that.

I had a ride in the B-17. I'll never forget it. Highly recommended.
