Hi!
Anyone have any experience in changing OAT gauge an old Cherokees?
Ours has the old probe sticking out the tope of the windshield, but after
replacing it twice with new units, it still doesn't work.....
We would love to get a newer more reliable digital OAT readout.
Anyone got any ideas of a good unit, preferably with a website.
Is there a lot of fuss to change this paper wise?
I mean, do we need an approval, or is this not considered a major change?
I saw a combined OAT, carbon monoxide alarm, clock, stopwatch etc instrument
in an add in AOPA pilot magazine.
Anyone got one of these installed in a Cherokee?
Thanks for any tips,
Frode Berg

I put a Davtron M303 in my cherokee 140 - it's a simple thermometer
and also displays voltage.
In early July 2005, there was a thread about Digital OAT which had, I think,
some discussion of some various OAT probes.
wrt paperwork. Since I was doing 337's for an engine change and
some other stuff, I did the 337 at the same time. Oh yeah, the
other reason for the 337 is that the M303 is not PMA'd for the cherokee
(but is for Beech aircraft). And, of course, I talked to the FSDO before
proceeding.

My OAT is now a probe on the JPI engine analyzer. I'm cornfused as
to how much can go wrong with the old unit that gives you problems.
My previous OAT was just one picked out of the Wentworth aviation
junk box at a few Oshkoshes ago. I've still got it somewhere.

Hey Ron... we all missed ya last night at the party!
Our OAT needs to be calibrated (it's wacked) but when I tried to hold the
nut under the dial and turn either the dial or the shaft, nothing budged. I
was afraid I'd break it.
Since we just put a new windshield in our plane, we mounted the old OAT in
our side window. Now we're putting new side windows in and have opted for a
Davtron digital OAT. I picked one up at OSH yesterday, $130. It's only
approved for Beech so we'll probably need a 337 to put it in our Aztec, I'll
check with our local FSDO man before drilling any holes.
