View Full Version : San Diego during Thanksgiving

Gang,

I would plan to fly into the San Diego area over Thanksgiving. First of
all, is this a good idea for this time of year or should I mentally
prepare myself to "fight" against tons of heavy iron with my little 182?
Plan of the visit would be SeaWorld and the Zoo. What would be a good
airport for this purpose (Montgomery?).
On a final note, I am Class Bravo challenged and VFR only (I do know
about the fog at night and in the morning at this time of year).

Thanks a lot!

Can't testify directly about SD, but I fly into a Houston Class B
airport every year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving--the heaviest
air travel day of the year--without a problem.

What do you mean, "Class Bravo challenged?"

With regards to commercial operations, would flying into San Diego on the
Wednesday before Thanksgiving be any different than any other Wednesday of
the year? Do the airlines add more flights into large cities during this
period? I didn't think they did.

You could go into Palomar (KCRQ) which is only a few miles up the
road. It is Class D and not a big deal... Where are you flying in
from?

Maybe if I looked at you sig I could have figured it out.

Palomar is a great choice... They have a rental car place right by the
transient parking. The fog in the morning has been no problem the
past week or so... I don't think it is expected to change over the
next few days.

In my experience, going into class Bravo airports is very smooth. You
are sequenced from way back, and the controllers are pros.

Sorry, should have put a smiley there ;-) ; I meant that I have never
operated in or near class B yet. On the other hand, why shouldn't it be
this time...
I will also consider Palomar as Mike suggested, although it's slighty
off San Diego, anyway.

Thanks

Thats like the easyiest class b airspace. I have been there many times. The
weather has been really clear. I may go into Oceanside Monday.

The drive will take longer than the drive with traffic in San
Angeles (ie, all of SoCal) especially
between Sunday at 3am and Saturday night at 11:30pm.
I'm actually serious depending on where you are going. On
thanksgiving it could end up taking you an hour and a half to go 20
miles.

class B will take care of it all. They'll separate any iron (and
aluminum). Just be prepared that you don't hear the magic "cleared
through/into Class Bravo" if you try to go directly through the Bravo.
I have never tried going through it but both times coming out of
Montgomery (MYF ?) on climb out I called up SoCal for flight following
and they cleared me to climb to 8000 through bravo without even
asking almost immediately. Going into Montgomery can be a little
confusing as you have to fly through a tunnel to get there....
SAN bravo has down low and Miramar Class B has up higher or vice
versa...something like that. Just stay at your altitude when flying
in from north of there and know where you are. Hopefully you
know what the area looks like so you can spot Mount Soledad in
La Jolla. Once reaching there turn in land and look for the
airport to the right....not the huge one to the left which is Miramar.
I've never come up from the south which will be trickier with the VFR
transitions through bravo.

Montgomery would be perfect for both. Brown is more south and much
smaller.

do you have a GPS? If so, pick up the VP waypoints.

Overall, it should be as easy as any other day.

Call the field manager about the weather. Most likely, if you arrive
after noon time, you'll miss all of the marine layer.

One other note about Carlsbad, they have TONS of corp jets going into
and out of it. it also has commercial operations. I used to fly
on UA Express as a 1K for a few years so landing there myself
was a treat. Note, the airports refer to this as CLD rather than KCRQ.
Internationally CLD is somewhere in south america or central america.

Palmar has the world's most expensive gas. If you're going to Sea
World, I would recommend the Int'l airport. The fees are VERY
reasonable and you can probably walk to Sea World from the airport.

Palomar is where I usually fly out from, it is not bad.
But, it is quite a ways from SD. I suggest Montgomery Field.

I flew into Mongomery a few months ago and had a very good experience
with Gibbs Flying Service. Call ahead and you can get a courtesy van.

Brown is right next to a field in Mexico with the same layout, and it's
easy to confuse the two if you are dodging some low clouds.

Class B airports are actually pretty dead on Thanksgiving Day. Not many
people want to airline travel ON Thanksgiving. The Sunday AFTER is the
busiest airline travel day of the year, however.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I think that I will fly into
Montgomery. I would plan to fly in (VFR) through V460 and the JULIAN VOR
and then see where San Diego Approach wants me.
I also have a GPS, although it's just a small handheld (GPSMAP 76).
Regarding FBO: someone suggested Gibbs. What's about crownair? At least
the SS fuel is cheaper there, although not guaranteed, according to AirNav.

Do the US airlines actually reduce the number of daily flights on
Thanksgiving day?

I suggest Gillespie (SEE). It is way east of the Bravo AND the San Diego
Trolley, which will let you connect with the public transport to all the
major San Diego attractions (as well as all the way to the Mexican border
right at the Tijuana crossing) has a station just off the departure end of
28.

Fuel isn't too bad or too good; they USED to have 80 and cargas but I
understand that both of them are gone now.
