View Full Version : So...What did Santa Bring you?

Jay Honeck

Ho! Ho! Ho! I'll start -- Santa was good to us this year! He brought
us...

- Rod Machado's DVD "Aviation Humor", Part I
- Microsoft Flight Simulator X Pro for the Kiwi
- Some more screwdrivers, pliers, and cordless driver bits for my son
to lose

Nothing specific for Atlas this year, but we just did the 496 panel
dock/XM radio thing, and had to buy a new "Mighty Grape" fuel truck --
so that's enough of an aviation upgrade for our Christmas season...

How 'bout you? Whad'ja find in *your* Christmas stocking?

Somehow, Santa managed to stuff a Bose Wave Syatem into Bea's Christmas
stocking this year.
She loves it! She's had it on constantly for the past two days. She's been
into Celtic music ever since Michael Flatly blew her a kiss from the stage
one night when we were attending "Lord of the Dance" :-)
I have to admit it; after watching the Celtic Women perform and seeing
Mairead Nesbitt play the fiddle, I'm a bonafide fan of Irish music now
myself.

I got a Logitech extreme 3D Pro joystick for Flight Sim so I can
practice my approaches with a twist rudder and a higher quality control
system. Haven't tried it yet (we hosted Christmas) but I'm looking
forward to it.

You'll like it. Rudder pedals make a world of difference in crosswind
landings!

I just spent the last few hours installing Flight Sim X on the Kiwi (I
gave my desk staff folks off Xmas afternoon/evening off) at the hotel,
tweaking it here and there.

Thus far I'm fairly satisfied with it, since so many people warned me
that it was a resource hog (It's a 15 GIGAbyte program!) and might not
run. Still, I've got the fastest computer money can (reasonably,
relatively speaking) buy, and the best I'm getting out of FSX is 32
frames per second. I've seen it drop as low as 16 FPS.

This isn't bad at all, running two monitors and with the realism set to
high, but it's a far cry from the butter-smooth 55 FPS I was getting on
FS9. Still, it's certainly flyable, and the enhancements to the
program are pretty cool. I've only started to scratch the surface of
what's there, but the mountains are MUCH improved, the turbulence is
pretty authentic, and I like the new aircraft that come with the Pro
version.

And I'm here to tell you that racing the jet truck in an Extra 300
(alongside Patty Wagstaff in HER Extra) is awesome!

Jay,

I got Flight Sim X for Christmas also. Have you found a way to get it
to properly simulate a Garmin 430/530? I was using the Reality XP plug
in for FS 9, but it doesn't seem to be out for FS X yet...

Certainly helps with keeping current on all the GPS procedures.

Those things *are* amazing. They look waaaay too small to produce such
huge sound -- but produce it they do. Are they still so stinkin'
expensive, or have they come down some in price?

Ever since the cast of River Dance stayed with us at the inn (man, are
those folks ever in shape!), Mary and I have enjoyed that style of
music, too. I can't take it as a steady diet, but on occasion it's
great!

Nope, I haven't played with that yet -- although I see they've got
Mooneys and Cessnas that have G1000 panels in 'em now!

Pretty cool. I'm still working to get the realisms set to a happy
medium, where I get smooth frame rates and acceptable scenery.

I believe it was 500 dollars plus tax total. What impressed me was that I
ordered it on Monday afternoon at about 3PM and it was delivered the next
morning at 10AM. I hadn't specified next day shipping. They just sent it out
that way. They seem to be a first rate outfit through and through. Really
enjoyed dealing with them and the set is as you say, unbelievable sound for
a unit that size. I've had full system stereos that were not nearly this
well made and had this quality.

I swear I can't figure out how anyone can make their feet move that fast.
The precision is unbelievable. Sort of reminds me of the Marine Rifle Drill
Team. It's some of the most impressive stuff I've ever seen done on stage.
You couple this with the sheer beauty of the Celtic music and it's a winner.
Hope you, Mary and the gang had a great Christmas.
Let's hope the new year finds some reason in the world.

Okay, now that creep has set in, I'll ask about the new flight
simulator: Can you drive three monitors, one forward, and two more,
one for each side? The one thing I don't like about sim flying is that
I can't just turn my head and see when to turn base. I've got the hat
thingy on my joystick, but it is not natural to use. I'd like to just
turn my head and see the side view.

Back on topic, Santa gave me an max takeoff weight upgrade for my
homebuilt. 5 pounds of aluminum strategicly placed adds 130 pounds to
the max takeoff weight. A great trade-off in my opinion.

Do you have a ton of RAM? If you have a couple gigs, then set it up so that
your video card can borrow some; that might help. Remember though, RAM is
the key. (assuming you have a fast processor, which I guess you do)

Oh yeah. You can actually do up to SEVEN monitors!

I've got two monitors -- one dedicated to the instrument/radio panel,
plus one giant projection screen for "The World" -- but we've tossed
around the idea of adding "side window" monitors...

Flight Sim is just like real flying -- the spending never stops! :-)

Santa's Elf (who remarkably resembles my wife) ensured that Santa brought
me a copy of Flight Sim X as well. Now I'm going to have to buy pedals and
a yoke... Thank goodness for after-holiday sales! :)

This same Elf worked very dilligently to get my son a Nintendo Wii. I gotta
tell you - that's one neat getup. The graphics aren't so remarkable
(typical Nintendo style 3-D animation), but that Wii Controller is fairly
brilliant and even accurate. I bet it won't be more than a year or two
before every system is using that technology. It completely changes the
nature of the game from a bunch of kids sitting on their butts clicking
arrows to a true and complete interactive game.

When you're batting in baseball, you're batting in baseball. I actually
worked up a pretty good sweat playing the Tennis game! And the golf swing,
while not what I would call an accurate simulation, certainly recognizes a
quarter swing versus a half swing, etc.... And that was just the sample
games!

I can't wait to try out the Madden NFL 2007 game that Santa brought. :)

Oh and for the realistic "experience", it only sets you back about half as
far as the PS3 and XBox 360 that are all the rage because the faces look
more "real", even though the experience is the same...

Good choice Santa's Elf! :)

AIRPLANE! a high-wing taildragger ala Cub or Maule with Tundra
tires. About 1.5" long & wide :) I darn near fell of my seat..and
my wife was a bit envious...

Anyone else get a plane in their Christmas Cracker?

The REALLY best one...or 2 or 3
I also got a commitment (her suggestion!!!) from my wife to CONTINUE
active flying, tho we are in major "pay-off-debt" mode...we owe only
$20K on the house and plan to pay off this year (!!!). She wants me
to keep current and competent :)

I'm going to try to fly at least 5 hrs/month, + go nuts on finishing
my glider ticket in the Spring (I soloed recently)

AND...I think she is finally convinced to do a Pinch-Hitter Course.
She's starting to comment about altitude and heading changes...I told
her to "fly it yerself" but she wasn't confident enough. A few hours
with a CFI and I think she'll be ready to take ALL the lessons :)

....and she wants to buy me a nice $$ flight jacket next year ...gotta
love her!

Happy Holidays to all!

Had to laugh when I opened it. I guess someone else in the family will
be getting one of them as a belated Xmas gift.

I also got a set of adjustable foggles (started my IFR training last
week), a red/white LED flashlight, and a copy of "Wager with the Wind"

Books I won't be able to read for a little while (MBA program I'm in is
killing me!)
Some CDs
A nice LED headlamp for night x-country skiing.

Best part was flying down to PVD to pick up my Dad. That was his gift
from me. Flew back to KFIT. He was thrilled. Quick flight, 35 minutes.
He always comments on how much the radio work has increased since his
flying days in the early 60s.

Then a nice dinner of roast beast. Time with family is my best gift.

What is wrong with the G 430/530? I'm still wishing I could find an
add-in that supports the KLN-89B. I bought my FS2004 mainly to maintain
instrument proficiency, not thinking that it wouldn't support the unit I
fly. Oh well, my son likes to play with it at least so it wasn't a
total loss.

My colleague and I got our Christmas present early, on Friday. Stuck
in Denver with commercial air traffic at a halt, our company decided to
send the company jet for us. Picked us up at Centennial at 8:30am, and
arrived at home at 11:30. At home with the family for Christmas:

Hi Dudley,

Back in 1976, while I was assigned to Korea, I purchased a pair of the Bose
501-II speakers. They are still hooked up to my secondary music system,
putting out terrific sounds just like they did back then. Never a hiccup
with them. Bose does build stuff well!!!!!

I do not care for them as a part of a home theater surround system (tried,
got something else) but for just listening to music, they cannot be beat.

Glad to know Bose continues with their great equipment line.

Happy New Year,

Kevin,

Yes, time with family is the best Christmas gift. My daugher flew
home safely from Denver the night before Christmas. We drove from NY
to CT to spend the last Christmas get together with my two sisters'
families yesterday. The weather was a bit iffy for flying. One of
sister is moving the West Coast after the New Year. Changes are
inevitable parts of life. We lost our father two weeks ago. The
wonderful memories of spending time with him last Christmas, last
Thanksgiving and other visits throughout the years (made more
frequently the last few years with the use of of our Cardinal) will be
with me forever.
Cherish the time you have with your loved ones.

I still have a couple pairs of 301's from the early 80's. They still
work fine but I believe the foam around the woofers has seen better
days. I have the Bose Aviation X headset and it is the best I have tried
(better befor the price).

I also wouldn't buy Bose for my home speakers. I have a preference of
Paradigm speakers for that. The Paridigm Reference series speakers
totally rock!!

Santa brought me a Zuluworks Gazelle Flight bag. The two detachable end
bags and adjustable interior dividers make this a nifty and flexible
flight bag. Now I have the carrying capacity for lots more "stuff" that
Santa can bring me next Christmas.
One of these days the weather might cooperate and I can take the bag for
a ride and see how it works on the right seat.

Merry Christmas, one and all!

There goes the night vision! <g>

How many LED's does it have, Quad, meaning 4? How many watts?

I would think you would need a lot of brightness for night skiing, but I
don't know. There is not a lot of scross country skiing, here at the foot

A Les Paul electric guitar.

Now I've just got to learn this song.

A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

Theres no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Yes, and rudders help takeoffs too. But I use FS to practice instrument
procedures and scan, so while it may feel good to land after an
approach, if I did a good approach, I really don't care whether I crash
afterwards or not. :)

That said, I do like it. It takes some getting used to though - I had
to adjust the sensitivites and re-train my hands. Also I can't use this
stick in the same casual manner I would use the other one. My first few
approaches were pretty crappy on this stick, but once I got it all
straightened out they got lots better. The rudder helps me make small
course corrections on approach, although the ball jiggles around a lot.
I'm more coordinated with real rudders than with this twist thing (and
that's fine).

One nice feature is that Logitech's driver can send a whole bunch of
commands on one button press, and can also cycle through commands on
each press. This makes radio work much easier - without my hands
leaving the joystick I can tune any radio fairly quickly and easily. In
fact, it would be great if =real= aircraft radios had the capability of
a software interface.

I set the trigger button to cycle through the Mhz and Khz of each radio
of interest (there are two) and two thumb buttons take care of up and
down. Real airplanes have more radios of interest, but it wouldn't take
much (conceptually) to do something similar that would include them all.

At the very least, it would be nice to be able to program the GPS from
the yoke!

No, Jay. It's just a simulation. It's not real. (Smacks Jay around

Now, get Patty Wagstaff in the Kiwi in person - THAT would be awesome!

wear a helmet when I walk around either, unless I am chewing gum.

Yup 4. Not sure on the wattage but it is 21 lumens. That is very very
bright for a headlamp.

We live in Central Mass. Lots of great cross country skiing around here,
assuming there is snow, which we don't have yet. So the gadgets will
have to wait, unless I do some night hiking which my dog would enjoy
instead of the skiing.

Is that bright enough at skiing speeds to avoid whatever darts in front
of your headlamp?

Cross country skiing, where it is flat, is not much faster than a fast walk.
We are not talking about downhill ski speeds, here!

Does FS X come with the 430/530? (I haven't opened the box yet, but I
know it was an add-on for FS 9)

I'm sorry for your loss, Hai. The holidays are a bad time for such
things. (Not that there is a good time...)

I echo your thoughts about GA as a wonderful "time machine" for seeing
more of family and friends. Were it not for our old Warrior, I would
never have been able to spend as much time with my Mom when she was
dying.

And we just returned from an over-night flight to Wisconsin to attend
Mary's family Xmas celebration. Atlas saved us from an 11-hour
round-trip drive, in exchange for a 3-hour round-trip flight.

(Does it come with a lifetime replacement guarantee?)

> Lemme know how ya like it...

I like it. However, it is clearly a right-handed joystick, and I fly
with my left hand, so many of the buttons are on the wrong side, and the
fist support is ineffective. It would be nice if they made it more
ambidextrous (and it wouldn't be all that hard either) but they didn't.

One nice feature (of the driver) is that you can program any button for
an entire sequence of commands, or to cycle through commands (a
different command on every press). I set the trigger up for the radios
using that feature.

It has a stronger spring than the other joystick and I'm still getting
used to that, but it operates smoothly. Once I got used to the twist
yoke that was nice too (though my ball still bobbles).

This joystick has a more solid base, so I can't just use it in my lap
like the other stick I had. However, I managed to figure out an easy
temporary way to set it up near my computer (one clamp, and move the
keyboard) and that works well.

I'll second this one. My condolences Hai...and our prayers to you and
your family. Times like this are difficult and it seems that only time
helps...but even then only so much as we are faced with the loss of
someone that can't be replaced.

An excellent point Jay. I was able to take my Dad flying on the 24th
and it was great. The airport restaurant had closed early but that
didn't matter. We just took off and around 1000 AGL, I gave him the
airplane as we buzzed around the local lake. It was amazing to watch
him return to his element and do a great job of maintaining altitude and
keeping the ball centered as we tooled around. I even had him fly
vectors for a practice ILS approach.

I think it needs to be permanently attached to whatever version of PMC

Try mounting it on a piece of wood, say 10" x 18", with a pedestal about 8"
high, just big enough to mount the base on, and put a couple clamps of some
design to hold the base firmly on the pedestal.

That should let you sit on it with your legs, and have it high enough to be
about the same height as a normal stick. Put a little padding on the
plywood, if you need more comfort.

Good idea, but I already have a satisfactory solution. I have a piece
of plywood that my keyboard sits on, on top of another piece of plywood
for the (large) monitor. When I want to use the joystick, I just remove
the keyboard, and clamp the plywood pieces together (further out, which
is why I need the clamp) and put the joystick on the plywood. It stays
fine.
