Know the event well, as well as the guy who did it :-)
I think Tex probably sold more airplanes for Boeing that day over the races
than the sales department could have in ten years. He did get the "word"
however, not to do it again!!
He had a photo of the airplane inverted hanging in his office for many
years.
It was a barrel roll BTW, NOT an aileron roll, in case anyone ever asks you.
He had to keep positive pressure in the oil system.

Actually "knew him" would be more accurate. Tex died back in 98.
Great guy, and he pulled off one hell of a stunt back there with the
prototype Dash 80! We always kidded him about it looking like a "whale"
roll!!! :-))

I read once that, when questioned about the the roll and the potential
financial disaster for Boeing if he had crashed, Tex replied that he had
practiced it already, so he knew that it could be done.
Funny, if true.

His son still does interviews about it. His son looks to be social

I listened to a talk that Tex gave in the cafeteria of the 40-87
building in Everett back when I was working there. It was probably
1992 or 1993.
His talk was about a P-39 aircobra that he was involved in modifying
for an air race. One of the things he brought up early in his talk was
about how the landing gear came up in less than 2 seconds.
Unfortunately his memory was getting pretty bad and he kept asking if
he had brought up the fact that the landing gear came up in 2 seconds
throughout his talk. He must have asked that 15 times over the course
of his talk. After a while it almost took on the character of a
running joke, and it was hard to show the proper respect and keep a
straight face, especially since my engineering lead was sitting right
next to me with his hand over his face and a supressed laugh every time
Tex asked that question. I had to avoid looking over at him to avoid
laughing myself. It was one of those embarassing moments that are so
awkward you can't help but want to laugh.
Yes, I know that old age memory loss is not a laughing matter...

Hey Dudley,
Speaking of whales... D'ya think the structure (spars?) on the A380
would hold up to a barrel roll? Airbus could use some positive press
for that program right about now. That'd be even more spectacular than
the photos of the A380 four-ship from last year!

Well....you can do a barrel roll all the way down to 1g if you have the
right parameters set up and execute properly. As near as I can figure, to
set this up for the 380 you would need about all the sky you could get both
under you and around you!!!:-))

It had to be strange for Orville, watching the ongoing never ending
legislation and restrictions and regulations coming into the picture as
aviation progressed. It had to conflict with his mental images of those
early days on the beach with the Flyer.
You have to wonder sometimes how someone like Neil Armstrong must feel when
he's all alone out late walking his dog and looking up at a new full moon?
Interesting introspective.

Is it truly an entirely 1 g maneuver? It seems like you would have to pull
1+ G's at the end. The nose goes down and has to be pulle dback up, no?

No it's not entirely a 1g maneuver. This comes up from time to time.
The entry to the roll initiation can either be considered or not considered
as part of the maneuver. Usually, in the classic sense at least, the entry
to the roll initiation point is considered as part of the maneuver. In this
case, you have to pull above 1g leaving level flight and as such, the g
during this phase of the roll has to be above 1g naturally.
If you have to dive to gain entry airspeed as is the case in low powered
airplanes like say a clipped winged Cub for example, the climb phase into
the roll from the entry airspeed point is also above 1g. Also, if the roll
is done in a way that requires the aircraft to be returned to level flight,
the exit phase as the nose comes back to level flight will also be above 1
g.
I should be a bit more clear when I speak peripherally on barrel rolls, as
many pilots consider them only from the level flight to level flight
scenario; where as in reality, a barrel roll can be performed from almost
any attitude of flight; most of these not requiring a return to level flight
at all....and subsequently not requiring higher entry and exit g.
When I speak of barrel rolls, I should specify that I'm not speaking of the
classic barrel roll entry and exit.
I speak ONLY of the part of the roll beginning at the initiating point where
the aircraft begins it's path through 3 dimensional roll. Because this point
can be executed from various attitudes of flight, it is this point that I
describe as being capable of being performed at various levels of positive g
down to 1g.
In other words, I only consider the aircraft in barrel roll when the flight
path is transitioning through 3 dimensional flight. I use this analogy
because in actuality, a barrel roll can be initiated from flight attitudes
other than from the classic level flight entry.
The actual roll can be performed as loosely down to 1g (I've even done them
completely unloaded) or as tight (higher positive g) as the aircraft's roll
axis through 3 dimensions will allow (in a fighter for example...a vector or
lag roll)
To clarify on your point; if a barrel roll is started from level flight and
ended at level flight, the entry and exit flight path will indeed require
positive g above 1.

It was a true barrel roll. He had to keep pressure in the scavenger pumps
and this required positive g all the way around. The g was above 1 going in
and back to level flight and at 1 through the roll. (through the roll BTW is
where I describe barrel rolls)

I'm sorry, but I've not seen this interview and he never mentioned Chandelle
with us that I can remember.
Just off the top of my head, he might have been referring to the extreme
high nose attitude he had to attain before initiating the roll off the
climb. The roll he did had an extremely loose and wide parameter and in
order to keep the exit speed in line he couldn't allow the nose to get WAY
down in the recovery. This required a VERY high entry nose attitude above
the horizon so that when past inverted going around, the nose attitude on
recovery would be low but not THAT low. After recovery, he just eased the
bird back to level flight from it's nose low position.
The reference to a Chandelle could have been Tex's way of emphasizing how
high the nose actually had to be, and not so much a direct reference to a
Chandelle being performed.
Personally, I'm not qualified in anything that large, but my guess based
simply on the energy involved would be that the Dash 80 would be VERY hard
pressed to perform a Chandelle without stalling out due to drag rise before
a max altitude/180 degree position change had been reached. Could
be.......but I'd like to actually see that before I'd believe it. However,
if anyone could do it, Tex would have been the guy to try it! :-)

I hope it could hold up to 1 g. According to the history channel, the
head guys called the pilot to the mat and brought in some engineers.
Their main concern was that the aircraft was not certified for neg g's
and they thought fuel/oil/etc could unport. When the pilot explained to
him that he never got over 1.5 g's they seemed calmer.

He came and talked to our EAA Chapter about that time, and we discussed writing
after he signed a copy of his book for me. About nine months later, we happened
to meet in an elevator. He remembered me, and that I was a fellow author.

Not just for Jose, but for everyone in this thread, Tex spelled his
name "Johnston", and he did not roll a "707".
From Wikipedia:
Alvin M. "Tex" Johnston (August 18, 1914 - November 14, 1998) was a test
pilot for Bell Aircraft and the Boeing Company. He is best known for
rolling the Boeing model 367-80 (better known as the Dash-80, the prototype
of the KC-135 Stratotanker, which was the basis for the 707) in a
demonstration flight over Lake Washington on August 7, 1955. The maneuver
was caught on film and is frequently shown on the Discovery Wings cable
channel in a three-minute short as part of the Touched by History series.

Tex is gone, but the Dash 80, restored to it's original (ugly) brown
and yellow paint scheme stands in the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy center.

He spelled his name Johnston because that was his name, and the prototype
Dash 80 has been established several times in this thread.

Don't you hate it when you post something like this after hitting the spell
checker only to find out that Microsoft for some ungodly reason known only
to them decided that "specifify" is actually a word?????????????????
Or it COULD be fat fingers.......................then again it could be SLOW
fingers.................then again it could be a FAST repeater keyboard
setting......................or perhaps the cat...............YES!!! That's
IT!!!! It was the cat!! He jumped up on my lap at the exact moment I was
typing that word.
I have disciplined the cat. This should not happen again! :-))))

P.S. The spell checker is now showing specify as the correct spelling :-))
