View Full Version : Join us for our 6th Annual Fly-In Pool Party!

Jay Honeck[_2_]
July 3rd 08, 02:45 PM
For six years we've thrown the world's only fly-in pool party at the Alexis
Park Inn & Suites, America's aviation themed, all-suites hotel, located
right next to Rwy 25 at KIOW! Starting at 3 PM on the Saturday before
Airventure, we offer free food, beverages (adult and otherwise), and
entertainment, all served at poolside throughout the evening, as our way of
saying "Thanks!" for another great year! Stop in for a free brat and a pop,
or spend the night. (The airport FBO will be offering a 25 cent per gallon
discount for the event.) We also have limited camping space on the hotel
grounds, if needed.

The Alexis Park Inn & Suites is located adjacent to Rwy 25 in Iowa City, IA,
but there's no need to walk -- we'll come pick you up in our courtesy van.
Cherokee Pilots Association members receive a 10% discount, anytime.

Then, on Sunday morning (not TOO early!), whoever wishes to join our caravan
into the FISK approach at Oshkosh is welcome to do so! We usually have
between 3 and 10 aircraft in trail, which offers the opportunity to
experience the arrival procedures into OSH with some very experienced
pilots. (We've even got a full-sized flight simulator at the hotel, and
we'll have the FISK approach set up so you can practice beforehand!) The
flight up from Iowa City is an easy 90-minute flight, and you'll arrive
fresh as a daisy -- important when you're flying in the busiest airspace in
the world.

Come one, come all, and start your Oshkosh experience right!

What a sad indication of the state of these newsgroups. Someone posts an
open invitation to an aviation themed party they've gone to considerable
expense to host annually for several years, and so far the responses consist
of a dozen unrelated posts from idiots slagging each other.

Jay, it's not withing striking distance for me, but I hope it's a great
success for you.

Actualy, it;'s only eight, but it doesn't say much for the party, does it?

Jay..

Thank you for taking the time to put this on.. Unfortunately I've
not been to OSH since that one time in 2002, when I tracked you down one
night up there and sat round chatting with you and the missus.

Gas is too damn expensive.. and my personal finances are just not in a
position to support going to OSH yet again. I've not even flown in a
year and a half now, and have let my medical, EAA and AOPA subs go to
boot. Just gave my last presentation (OSH survival guide, no less) at
our EAA chapter meeting, because I am stepping down as VP of my chapter
and having let things lapse will no longer be a member.

Maybe sometime in the future when I grow wings again, you might still be
doing the BBQ/Pool party, because I know I am missing something fun and
special with a great group of people.

Thanks, Dave. It's truly disheartening to hear that you've dropped out of
flying altogether -- but I know you're not alone. (Don't worry -- the
Fly-In Pool Party will continue as long as we own the hotel!)

I can see why you've dropped out, though. My son and I just got back from a
three-day custom car show in Des Moines. There were thousands of people in
attendance, and you could literally walk for days and never see the same car
twice.

More importantly (and to the point) for about 10% of what I've spent on
aviation over the years, we could own many of the coolest, most tricked-out
collectible cars at that show. I will never become as excited about cars as
I am about airplanes, but it's easy to see why "normal" people might choose
to go that route.

It's why I'm not here much anymore.

Come on over to Pilots of America, if you want to experience what this group
once was.

I was up this afternoon practicing landings at two different airports,
and it was fairly busy (about 120 miles, more or less, south of SFO)
locally.

Between a handful of Citations, a Pilatus, a Piaggio Avanti, a gaggle of
Cessnas, handful of Beechcraft, various helicopters, an experimental
getting in its first 25 hours, a Pitts and a Christen Eagle, and the LSA
I was renting, I wasn't having trouble staying awake.

Never did see the Staggerwing heading past on its way south, but I did
see it parked at Frazier Lake yesterday.

It *was* pretty quiet along the coast, what with the low deck hanging
around all day near the beach, and the smoke from the Big Sur fires is
still messing up visibility to the south of us.

It's been nearly dead now, really, for sure, for much of the past 50
years. It's been trying to shake that cough since the late 40s, at least.
