Depending on the date of the photo - It started life as a Pursuit, but the
redesignation had it as Fighter or F-80 before the end of service.

Two ways to tell a "P" from an "F":
1. No red bar in the center of the white bar fore and aft of the star.
2. Buzz number starts with "P" rather than the later "F".

The red stripe was added to US military insignia in January 1947. "P" for
Pursuit became "F" for fighter in June 1948.
