Yes, KAL was just utter madness. I'm surprised that the incident died down
in the manner it did and so little was said or done about it.

Still, I love the Su-27 through 35 series. It is a fantastic aircraft. I
wonder if our airforce ever considered giving Sukhoi a buzz and buying some?
We could send them wheat and.... Timbits. :)

Does anyone know if there is any truth in the following story about
KAL 007.

I was told shortly after the event by a friend of my brother in-law
who was on Looking Glass that the KAL 007 shoot down was really an
attempt to kill a bunch of high ranking US military and government
officials. The South Korean government was to have an event honoring US
military and had invited all these US officials. There were rules
against this many high ranking officials being on the same aircraft but
as the Koreans were footing the bill it was ignored. The airline pilots
were suppose to input the Nav data into the computer by hand many
airline pilots had cartridges with set routs that they could just plug
in and save time. The plan was to replace the pilots cartridge with one
that changed the rout to fly the aircraft over soviet airspace and shoot
the aircraft down and as both side would know it was a military
operation it would be one more event in the cold war. The plan want bad
when the aircraft was refueling in Anchorage Alaska and another KAL
aircraft had mechanical problems. KAL ask the Military if they would
agree to switch aircraft so the civilian flight could depart on time.
The Military agreed and the aircraft departed on the bogus rout with
civilians onboard. The really funny part he said was that the Russians
almost didn't get the aircraft as there was a RC-135 spy plane flying
along the rout. The Soviets mistakenly thought that it was the KAL and
as it was just outside their airspace they were watching it so closely
that the KAL almost got away before they realized their mistake and went
after it. They almost got away !! That's the story I have a friend in
the NSA that would not comment on the story for what ever that means.

Don't forget, there was also another KAL to be shoot down by the Soviets in
1978. It was a Boeing 707 flying from Paris to Seoul and was shot down near
Murmansk on the Kola Peninsula after another display of poor airmanship by
KAL pilots.
