what kind of mirror is that on top of the cockpit between the first and the
second seat?
What is it good for?

I believe it is used by the back seat pilot/instructor to see above and
forward of the guy in front for landings and takeoffs. It gives him an
unobstructed view so he can take full control if the student is about to
pile it in.
