Hello! I"m new to the group and would like to ask if anyone knows of
someone in the biz of transporting gliders. I'm interested in a
glider located in far, far away land and am not too keen on the idea
of driving 5000 miles round trip.
thanks,

As always on an international group providing specifics or at least a
hemisphere will help you get an answer.

Anyone from your area headed to Little Rock for the SSA Convention?
Surely there is someone headed from Florida to there. That could make
a nice rendezvous point.

Zuniz2,
Posting here got my current glider delivered 1200 miles for a fair
price.
On a previous 1800 mile glider delivery I tried uship.com, which
will work great if you're flexible on timing. It works like ebay where
you set your price limits and the haulers bid on your load. Bids start
high, but like ebay, get more realistic as the bidding time nears it's
end. I calculated my cost to go get the glider myself, then set my bid
limits considering my cost and my time. I received offers in the $600
range after waiting for the bids to drop. Truckers pick up timing is
usually a short window. Hobbyist and collectors are very flexible. My
guy was into pickup truck campers, he was delivering one from close to
my home to well past where the glider was, and wanted $ to help pay
the trip home.
Good luck,
Barny

Hello Zuniz2,

I just bought a glider about 2500 miles away and used this guy in a
roundabout way through uship, I think if you contacted him directly it
would save a few bucks. The important part is that he is highly
overinsured for a glider trailer at no extra cost and he's not some
randon yahoo out there trying to scam a few bucks. I gotta tell
you......when I had him pick up my trailer 2500 miles away from home
the lights didn't work (yes the previous owner was there and confirmed
this even though he promised me they did a week prior), Robert rewired
the trailer in the rain and charged me less than any shop would
of...and for less than I would of been willing to stand out in the
rain and do it myself for. Then he caught a failing wheel bearing
before it let go ( I saw the wheel bearing, it definatly was about to
let go, so much for the owner telling me they had just been repacked),
rounded up the parts and changed BOTH at a truckstop himself in the
middle of the night for again.....parts + less than I would of been
willing to get greasy for. Awesome guy, communicated very well, and
the price was good. The best part was that he was so scared of hurting
anything he was driving way carefull.

His email address is , and you can find him on
UShip under the username yosimalac. Again, I'd try to contact him
directly to save a couple of bucks, and if your not in a big hurry he
can schedule another load on the empty run to save some more cash.

P.S. Did you buy a Zuni?

I forgot to mention, if the glider seller can locate a loading dock to
roll the trailer into a semi or onto a flatbed, the truckers will line
up at your door. Picture your new baby riding in a protected semi or
on a flatbed where wheel bearings and potholes are no worry.

I was in error, which is not uncommon. The glider in Zuniz2 is considering is located in Michigan and need to be transported to Baker City, OR.

I answered him by e-mail but haven't heard back yet.

On a few trips through Baker City, OR, I wondered about its potential
as a great soaring site. We may know more soon. Gary Boggs was there
last summer to aero and auto tow so the local FBO could test it out.
Gary had a flight in his baby Grob and got to 15,500 in the area.
Wayne told me about this a few weeks ago, so I stopped by to visit on
a return trip from Seattle. Tom Holland (FBO) and company have
acquired a two-seater and a tow plane. They need to finish some check
outs, but Serendipity Soaring should be operation next season. Baker
City has some tourist ride potential and local soaring interest,
obviously if someone is bringing in a single seater. The main runway
is 5000ft long. Airfield is 3360 MSL.

Be interesting to know if some of the PNW pilots think some epic
safari flights might be doable, Ephrata, WA>>Baker City, OR>>Moore or
Mackay, ID>>Logan, UT>>??

I am looking forward to flying at Serendipity Soaring. Currently we do not have a training facility close to the Boise metropolitan area. Even thought Serendipity Soaring is 125 miles away, it is a lot closer then Driggs. (330 miles), or Hood River (370 miles.)

That PNW safari suggestion sounds it could be a fun! Accommodation on such a trip can vary greatly from the Baker City historic Geiser Grand Hotel (http://www.geisergrand.com/) to tent camping at the King Mountain Glider Park, Moore, ID. (http://www.kingmountaingliderpark.com/)

Mackay, ID and the King Mountain Glider Park are only 16 miles apart. They both are in the valley at the base of the Lost River Mountain Range and provide access to Central Idaho's excellent summer soaring conditions (http://www.soaridaho.com/photogallery/Mackay_2006/) and the King Mountain wave window.

Hi Tim,

Both myself and folks (here at Soar Minden) have towed gliders all
around the country for the past 20 years. As I need to go to the east
coast fairly soon why don't you give me a call with the beginning and
end point and I've do my best to give you a very good deal...

Thanks,
