View Full Version : P-63 (?) Airacobra/Kingcobra power question
Ricky
November 3rd 09, 02:13 PM
A question for the physics-minded among us, or for anyone who just has
the answer.
I have heard the Airacobra was underpowered and that got me to
thinking;
Does having an engine at the middle of the fuselage (in any plane for
that matter, like the XP-58) and connected by a long shaft contribute
to a loss of power delivered to the propeller? In other words; would
there be more power delivered the closer the engine is to the prop?
Does the shaft "eat up" power in any way? I am a mechanic and pilot
and fairly knowlegable about a/c physics & aerodynamics but this has
me stumped.
Thanks in advance for your ponderings and/or solution!

As its name "rec.aviation.piloting" implies, this group is more for airplane
drivers than for aircraft designers or aviation historians. You will get better
answers at rec.aviation.military, and perhaps some very interesting answers at
rec.aviation.homebuilt.

Ricky, the question you'd have to ask is, if the energy is put into
the shaft at the engine end, where could it go? One answer is heat,
the the other sound energy, but really most of it is delivered to the
prop. Long shafts do cause vibration problems, but those can be
overcome.
As it happens, there are other reasons for putting engines close to
the front of a single engine airplane. The middle is a good place to
park passengers, you avoid the weight/space issues with the shaft.
My aerodynamic question had always been why there are fewer pusher
props. In a puller some of the wind energy is used up against the
airplane. In fact one of the things that made the Mooney 201 better
than the Executive is the windscreen and cowling were redesigned to
more effectively deflect the wind. In the case of the Mooney, the wind
against the airplane is airspeed plus that contributed by the prop,
and losses go up like something of the square of wind velocity.
This could be a long thread, and some posters may actually contribute
to the discussion.

The shaft itself won't eat up power, but the various gearboxes and shaft
supports required will. Every bearing has a bit of friction; every
gearbox has a bit of drag. A long drive shaft, and the gearbox required
to let the cannon shoot through the hub, would cost more power than the
straight installation.
Whether it was enough to matter, in the case of the P-39, is another
thing. ISTR the P-39's problem was the lack of a turbocharger rather
than overall low power... the Airacobra started losing oommmmph above
12,000 feet, and it turned out that most of the combat was higher than that.
Remember, Tex Johnston won the Thompson Trophy in a P-39, and set a
speed record, besides.

In a pusher, the prop has to operate in turbulent air stirred up by the
structure in front. Depending on the design of the airplane, the prop
also has to be stronger (e.g., heavier) to withstand the cycling loads
if there's a wing or something blocking part of the prop disk from the
slipstream (think Long-EZ).

Hey, thanks for your suggestion. I've been in Usenet since the early
90s and am very careful (generally) about on-topic discussion. This is
totally on topic and useful, interesting & beneficial to this
particular community. I am an "airplane driver," and, I'm sure you
know or will learn, drivers run the gamut of interest in airplanes in
every aspect.
I submit this topic with absolutely NO reservation that this is
violating the traditions of an "airplane driver's" group.
Thanks anyway,

Cessna?
The C-336/337 turns out to perform slightly better in single-engine
flight on the rear engine than the front.

Combat in the ETO tended to be higher than other theaters, which, since
the USAAC pulled the turbocharger from the P-39, hamstrung it in that
arena. The Airacobra was also a small aircraft, with limited fuel, as it
was designed as a point defense fighter, and lack of range hurt it, too.
That said, the Russians liked it pretty well, since air combat on the
eastern front tended to remain below 15,000', and it performed well down
there against the Luftwaffe. (In spite of the 37mm cannon, the P-39 was
used much more in the anti-air role, and not against German armor; the
Il-2 was much better down in the mud.)
The P-39/P-400 didn't exactly shine, not that it embarrassed itself, in
the Pacific, partly due to the long distances that were common there.

It's a question often asked in connection with long shafts.
The elastic angular compliance can be a positive help with vibrations,
which are absorbed by a quill shaft. But a shaft drive train that's
curved takes pillow blocks to support the curve, and these bearings take
some (small) power on their own account. Otherwise, air drag, and
bearing drag apart, there's no loss in a long quill shaft.

I had a ME design a centrifuge application with the shaft running well
above its critical speed a bunch of years ago, but don't remember the
tradeoffs that led me to accept that embodiment. It was not an
aviation application in any event. I did find the observation about
wind profiles around a pusher imposing design constraints -- I'd have
thought that far aft winds in the disk would be fairly uniform except
at high angles of attack.
Have you a sense of the improvement of thrust, if any, a given engine
might have wing mounted vs nose mounted? There's less to blow against
but the wind does extend to well past the prop disk so some of that
air near the outside diameter is compromised by the wing. I'm thinking
of an application where one wants the maximum endurance at fairly low
speeds. That around the world airplane that came out of Scaled
Composites might hold the answer.

Opps, not built by scaled composites after all. Interesting that the
rear engine was the one that ran all of the time, so that was the more
efficient location (but what does Rutan know?).

As Steve pointed out, you were thinking of the C336/337 Skymaster. It
*did* have a better rate of climb on the rear engine. One theory I read
was that it was due to the aerodynamics of the rather blunt back end
being better when there was an engine to help suck the air past....
There's no real pat answer; you can find efficient pusher aircraft, just
like you can find efficient tractor planes.
For an example, see:
http://www.ar-5.com/
Years ago, when there was a controversy as to whether paddles or
propellers were most efficient for ships, the British came up with a
simple test: They built two identical ships, with identical engines,
one with paddles and one with a prop. They tied a rope between the
sterns, and had the captains go to full power to see which had more thrust.
Pity you can't do this with a couple of airplanes....

Wikipedia says that "In 1848 the British Admiralty held a tug of war
contest between a propeller driven ship, Rattler, and a paddle wheel ship,
Alecto. Rattler won, towing Alecto astern at 2.5 knots (4.6 km/h)...."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propeller
However, it is probable that the paddle wheel ship simply didn't have the
right size paddles. Paddle wheels should be capable of efficiencies similar
to propellers - but it takes very large wheels.

Jim, Jim, Jim.... HOW can you set us up with a straight line like that?
1. "It's not the size of the wheels, it's how you use them."
2. "If they would have set up the wheels in a canard configuration, it
would have been more efficient."

Except when it belongs in the front.
"At full load the Mackinaw displaced 5,252.4 tons and drew 19' 2.25" of
water. Her innovative features included a 12 foot diameter bow propeller
which draws water from beneath the ice ahead, both weakening the ice and
sending water along the sides of the hull and reducing ice friction. The
Mackinaw also has a heeling system which can shift nearly 112,000 gallons of
ballast water from side to side in 90 seconds, allowing a rocking motion
which assists the Mackinaw in freeing itself from ice."

It's hard for me to believe that they are actually pilots considering the

That's probably not his real name. A search of the net indicates he has
trolled a rather diverse set of groups using that handle. He has mental
health issues and I believe should be treated no differently than anyone
with mental or physical handicaps.
I believe troll posts should be treated as one might treat a stranger
having an epileptic seizure: avoid making the problem worse by trying
overly active intervention.
It is your choice of course, but I think it is probably simplest to ignore
his posts and alert posters on an as-needed basis of his antics if any of
them appear to be unenlightened (i.e. suckered into debates with him.) I
personally don't think that there is anything useful to be gained from
tracking him down, as much as that idea may appeal to you.

While I've had some exchange of insults with you, I do agree that you have
a right to be an anonymous prick. If you post anything libelous or such,
well, that's what the legal system is for.
(Anyone who posts mostly under the same "From" address doesn't need to be
"exposed" since the poster has made it trivial for readers to killfile
their posts.)

Jim wasn't it you who thought that the flyover endangering 200 pax was a
"mishap not worthy of consequence?"
That incident included several career ending actions even before you get
into WHAT they were doing to cause the actions in question and the FAA
was perfectly justified in lifting the two certificates. In this
business there exists an environment concerning safety that allows no
"first time offenses" in the area these two pilots were operating. You
commit offenses in the category involved here and you are justifiably
history.
Before you shoot your mouth off as to who and what a troll is and how to
"ignore" them let me remind you of your endless battles with Bertie
Bunyip, Max and others whicxh effectively destroyed RAP.

All potentially sharp or dangerous objects have been removed from the
vicinity. I can call an ambulance if the trolling seizure lasts longer than
five minutes.

And if you send an error when that happens, you know the padding
failed. Now if you keep trying different random blocks, what's
eventually going to happen?
You'll get a message with valid padding. Valid padding might be 0x3 0x3
0x3. Or it might be 0x4 0x4 0x4 0x4. But if you're basically generating
random blocks, what's the mostly likely padding you're going to get
that will pass the check?

FWIW to everyone, the above post is NOT from me. I surely didn't post
this idiotic nonsense against Jim Logajan.
Don't know how you check out these things or if anyone is even
interested in checking it out but my email address is
. If you email me and check the path to my computer
I'm fairly certain you can establish who the real Dudley Henriques is.
Anyway, I'm really not interested in these Usenet hi jinks sofor the
future, if a post bearing my name doesn't come from THIS
computer, which is a Mac, and the post is hostile and directed to
someone you all know from experience I have no issues with, please
just assume that post isn't from me.
I don't know who the poster is but I only have experience with a
single individual on Usenet whom I would suspect and that would be the
poster known as Maxwell.

"Maxwell" uses a lot of other names. In alt.comp.freeware he currently
posts as "Jeffrey Bloss".
I recently explained some of his work and copied that to the music
groups where this sock is also active. However I left out the aviation
and security groups. If you're interested then this is what I wrote:
<http://groups.google.com/group/alt.comp.freeware/msg/6b9f81c7285f1539>
He's some disenchanted retired guy who still retains hopes of being a
pilot, pc security expert, member of special operations, and those sorts
of thing. I guess the Net is always going to be stuck with people who
live out their dreams online.
He's an accomplished sock and can maintain several different identities
at the same time. You can see this in the current thread "VST
Independence" in a.c.f.
c15e77679fdb15b/f71e0b7c2d576cee>
Some of his socks are placid but he's mostly noisy although I suspect
may be just a way of hiding limitations by bluster. As an example, his
boisterously proclaimed test of a pilot is surprisingly basic.
dc>
I expect his various socks will soon start posting in order to muddle
any discussion about him. But, hey, who cares. It's only the internet.
It's not real life.

Franklin, such projection!
How you can write that with a straight face is astonishing.
Nobody gives a rat's as what you have to say.
Why is that, you ask?
It's because you are a shameless psychopath and ACF's longest and most
prolific user of socks and forgeries in its troubled history, and especially
since ACF was invaded by the Pricelessware Cult crowd ~2004 who abuse
the group for discussing private website business affairs. You are one
of Pricelessware's troublemakers who denigrate and attack anybody who
speaks out against their abuse. You are also involved in the unlawful
SALE of Pricelessware CDs containing FREE software. What a racket!
People can read all about it here:
http://qdeo.com/td5 (link to text document)
.... ... ... ...
Evidence: here's a list of your KNOWN socks/forgeries over the past
6-9 months alone. There are certainly very many more that have not
become known which would probably DOUBLE the number listed below.
Complete Franklin exposé here:

I know of NO other person who abuses Usenet behavioural standards
and protocols more than you. You are a sick freak:

We have been after this Bloss clown for a year and finally caught him
with multiple cross pings and a retrace via Tor exit nodes.
He also posts as "Franklin" and claims he is a pilot. <no g>
Beware, he's a phool's tool.

don't. Anything posted through x-privat.org or anonymous mail2news

In ACF, I post only through sunsite/dotsrc. In other groups, only via

I got it. Boy this really ****es me off. I remember back in WWII I was

shooting niggars, Japs and Spics, killing them dead as fast as I could.

That reminds me of the time I was flying my Pee39 guns ablazin' I was
killing Nigras ten to a load when I looked down and saw I was near
Birmingham (Alabama boy not England****lands).
I says to myself - Here's something odd... the day after I read this I
was proofreading the next issue of my wife's magazine BOOKHAPPY (plug)
and one of the articles reviews a number of books about "The Wickedest
City." One of which is "Phenix City Alabama, the Wickedest City in
America," at least up until the mid 1950s when a gubernatorial
candidate was gunned down on the main drag, martial law was declared,
the entire police force was arrested and all the whorehouses and
gambling joints were shut down. COINCIDENCE???
It's the water, I tell you. That, and the unbearable psychic pressure
that comes from actually living in Alabama. Huey can bitch about
Arkansas all he wants, but at least he's not having to deal with people
who think Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the National Anthem. A place where the
police drove the Mafia out because they were COMPETITION--now THAT is a
sniffy place.

Franklin gave me a teabagging once but his eyes popped out and his false teeth
kept coming loose while he stroked my new boobs: http://is.gd/4OUdr with his
3-fingered clubhand. Apart from that his tongue resembles grade 9 sandpaper
and he makes a howling noise like a hyena while he slurps like a drain.

Well I could tell you stories about me flying my Pee39 guns ablazin
killing gooks, Ricans and Frogs at every turn but I drool so I can't.
This Franklin now there's somebody I would like to take my pearl handled
Colt 45s to, I betcha I could light up his ass that peckerhead. I'd put
him on my ailerons and perform 90 banks all the livelong day that
mother****er and I mean he ****s his mother literally would be dizzier

I'm in the flight safety business. My opinion on this matter reflects
ONLY that aspect of the incident and is not intended to reflect the
legal end of the equation. I drool so get my bucket ready.
For me, the answer is obvious. Had I been asked for input on what
transpired that input would directly address the fact that by
definition, this aircraft while in operation requires a pilot in
command at all times. In the flight safety context, this equates to no
action taking place concerning the operation of the aircraft that is
accomplished without the complete knowledge and consent of that pilot
in command. In other words, this aircraft was, at various times during
the progress of it's flight, NOT in control of the required decision
making process of BOTH the pilots in question AND the ATC on the
ground responsible for traffic separation. So **** 'em, the FAA burned
them without stakes adios cocksuckers.
For me, as a safety adviser, there is absolutely no argument with the
FAA action based on the safety issue. As I said, the legal issues are
another matter yet to be decided.I'll comment on that after I dump my
droolbucket.

John Stubbings,
I have little interest in your sexual preferences but...
I see that you are getting very worried and edgy about the possibility
of David Cameron becoming the next British Prime Minister.
It's not difficult to see why. After 13 years of the most incompetent,
corrupt, wasteful and dishonest socialist govt under Blair, now Brown,
for the first time you will need to take personal responsibility for your
own life. Your days of living off the backs of other people with endless
state handouts, all paid for by others who carry unbearable levels of
taxation will soon be numbered.
It will take a new Tory Govt to sort out the absolute shambles of public
finances, our bankrupt nation, our broken society, restore incentives to
work and get public services working again to serve the people who fund
them. The state of Britain today is far worse than it was the last time
the socialist Labour Party were evicted from office in 1979. That took
M Thatcher to repair and doubtless David Cameron will not repair the
wreckage overnight, but deal with it he will. I am confident of that.
Hopefully, the people of Britain have now finally learnt that socialism
simply doesn't work - in all senses of the word.

I wasn't measuring it DVH. I was just observing it.
3/4 car families. Houses piled high with posessions. Designer clothes
for the kids. Good healthcare. Couple of foreign holidays a year.
....and that's just people on the council estate I grew up on.
When I compare that to how I grew up. Just look at what has been
achieved. Amazing.
According to wikipaedia, the UK is the sixth largest economy in the
world. Blimey. Tiny island. *failed state* according to hummingbird.
Keep it real.

These are measurements. You're measuring prosperity in things like foreign
holidays and consumer goods.
No objection to that.
Your "index" could have increased in spite of any action by the Government.
For example having lots of consumer goods is a function of trade with China,
not the result of work by our dear leaders.

Yes, it is in many ways. I'm dubious as to how much of it was achieved by
government.

Funded by among other failed things as north sea oil, all of which (some may
think thankfully) are coming to an end, **** knows how we're going to find
sufficient cash to fund the 10,000,000 extra people expected in this already
overcrowded island within the next 20 years.
"So serious is this problem that some are inclined to see it in apocalyptic

Come on. Maggie changed our way of thinking [or very least tackled the
real problems we all knew existed] and Blair continued with that.
If the brit mindset hadn't changed we would be the poorer for it, I
think.
As Cameron said, "in these difficult times, Britain needs leadership,
character, and judgement"
We do. The funny thing is though, he was talking about himself...

Aw! You don't really believe that do you Ivan. I've lived a long time
and it's boring the number of apocalypses I missed. <shrug>
The good news is the future is rarely what you expect. Wow!!
Anyway this has been a shrewd move by successive brit governments to
flog off our oil before the greens go and devalue it.
You see years ago we realised the do gooders were going to spoil our fun
so we decided to make hay while the sun shone...
Then we decided to take control of the situation, cos the greeens
weren't working hard enough [socialists], and get our scientists to
dream up 'the Big Con', the sting of all stings... Global Warming.
By the time our oil runs out, the carbon quotas will have kicked in and
then we can sell nuclear reprocessing to the rest of the world. See
that's politics.
We're already gearing up the geeks to declare smoking marajuna safe so
we can flog it to the extra 10,000,000 souls you mentioned. That should
raise the ambient temperature a couple of degrees and the taxes
collected will make up for the oil revenue deficit.
So we'll all be nice and warm and buying chinese goods for years to
come.
Have a spliff. Calm down. It's all in hand. Don't worry.

thinking they have the right to speak when not spoken to.
Advise.

If you weren't such a joke I might even agree with you on some things,
but your leaning toward excessive exaggeration, downright intentional
misrepresentation, evasion, and character assasination of anyone who
might disagree with you, just negates any value in anything you ever
say, and makes dialogue impossible.

he might want to get the nym's middle finger
presented to him, one last time - on a platter.
This job apparently comes at a bargain price
