I was wondering lately how much are planes structurally designed or
how much do they follow standard construction techniques (copying)
developed for light aircraft?

Any engineer worth his salt will copy any feature that contributes to
his goals. Any aircraft that is to be approved by the FAA for a CofA
will be supported by structural analyses.
So the answer is yes to both questions, I guess.

For CAD I use a 486 computer for which no battery is available
anymore. A year ago I had to do without until I could rig a new battery.
I needed to do some simple drawings and the old kit was dusted off.
