View Full Version : Program letter cannot be faxed -- original must be mailed...

I inquired if the annual program letter could be emailed instead of
faxed to the local FSDO in Teterboro, NJ. Initially they said that a
signed, scanned letter could be emailed, then the "big boss" decided
that it could not be emailed and, in fact, could not be faxed, but an
original must be mailed in order for it "to be legal."
Would sure be great if SSA could undertake discussions with the FAA
about getting rid of the requirement for program letters for gliders
altogether. Seems like a lot of wasted energy and taxpayer dollars
with little or no benefit.
cheers,

It appears that the local FSDOs make their own policy with regard to
this. I and others have sent our program letters to the Houston FSDO
via scan attached to email and they were perfectly happy with it.

Invest in the stamp.
Program letters aren't going away any time soon. There is a long
history that reflects the FAA position that they are accomodating us
and this is the price we pay for such accomodation.
Yes- it is a waste.

Just so the example program form letter I presented is confusing, the
original program letter for the year is mailed, amendments may be
faxed.

Do you mail it certified with return receipt? At least with a FAX I
get a delivery confirmation, and so far no complaints from SDL FSDO.

Haven't, but you can now get Delivery Confirmation service also. A
bit cheaper than certified.

The FAA has nothing on the USPTO when it comes to faxes.

Would somebody be so kind as to show or copy paste an example of a
program letter?

The "received fax" is processed electronically, converted to PDF or similar
file, it is not printed, and then routed through internal email to be
processed.
A lot of this happens automatically, no human intervention.
We have this system at work, but it will process upside down pdf files and
email them.
