An F-15E from Lakenheath dropped a BDU-33 25lb practice bomb - and made
an 18 in crater.

Is this what they mean by 'Ground Attack' ??

Little Bitty Blue Death from above!

(Although I did see a guy kill a rattlesnake with a BDU-33 on the
flightline once... yes, it did have a charge in it and yes, the guy was
an idiot.)

Why the fuss. Everyones been missing the bombing range at RAF Holbeach for
years. Used to be a weekly occurrance to get calls about practice bombs
being found miles arround when I was in the Police there.

We had a F-117 bomb West Texas last year. He bombed a interstate dumpster &
somebody's bathroom before he found out he was dropping practice bombs. He
claimed he didn't know the jet was loaded with them, which may be true. The
investigation revealed he was running late, missed most of his pre-flight
briefing, his jet crapped out & switched planes at the last minute and
didn't pre-flight it.

No, wait, that was France.

I have a friend who killed a raven out on the China Lake range but I
can't remember if he used Blue Death From Above or a real bomb.

My friend killed a raven airborne over Baker after all the blue meanies
were expended - he hit it with one of the pylons on an F/A-18. The bird
hit the pylon square, rode up the slanted portion of the pylon and right
through the structure between the leading edge flap and the forward spar
of the wing box. He felt it, but as there were no inications of any
trouble in the cockpit, he made a "routine" approach and landing.
Discovered the damage on the postflight walkaround. Those telltale
black feathers...and that hole in the leading edge flap.

Then there was the guy that hit the flock of pelicans on takeoff - five
of them. He got the jet back around and on deck, but not quite as
"routinely"...

One of my friends hit a turkey with a P-3. Or maybe the bird was hotdogging
and made one pass a bit too close. I guess it isn't any easier to miss a
buzzard than a J-8 :)

The aftermath pictures were interesting. The bird hit the leading edge of
one of the wings, clear of the engines, made a big dent. One end of the
neck was hanging from the dent. The other end was still attached to the
lifeless head. That and a few feathers was about it.

I've hit a few pidgeons with my truck down in south Texas...and narrowly
avoided a flock of turkeys as well. I didn't even think turkeys could
fly...unlike Herb Tarlic...

The guy I mentioned that hit the pelicans tore the jet up pretty good -
F/A-18 vs five pelicans. Took off a good chunk of the canopy, flamed
out one engine, and tore through one of the LEX's. I think they pulled
one (mostly) whole bird off the jet when it landed...and I think the
pilot may have suffered some facial injuries though I recall that the
windscreen wasn't severely damamged.

I had some pictures of the damage around someplace once, but I seem to
have lost them.

Actually it was Mr. Carlson, not Herb. Herb did some other strange
stuff to animals, though. We never saw it but there were reports he got
ducklings to dance by putting them on a hot plate.

Most of us use the whole airplane for birds... Got 2 ducks at once with an A-6
once! :-)

When I was going through VT-10 back during the first Nixon administration,
one of the squadron's UC-45Js was hit by a buzzard during a low level VFR /
NAV hop over scenic southern Alabama.

(I say "hit by" because the Newtonian mechanics of a large - and in this
case, recently well-fed - buzzard striking a C-45 are a lot different than
those of a pointy-nose taking some poor little sparrow against a wing
hardpoint.)

Luckily the damn thing hit the aircraft square between the pilot and
co-pilot positions, with the gooey red ball of feathers, feet and
semi-digested carrion disintegrating on the way through the cockpit and into
the pax compartment. Not unlike the oft-quoted "hitting-the-fan" metaphor -
just different materials in the scatter.

Everyone made it back safely to the VT-10 line at NPA, but if they could
have clawed their way through the concrete the crew would have shed and
buried their flight suits on the spot - such was the stench. I'm not sure
but I think the poor C-45 was stricken due to the level of damage and the
age of aircraft.

Remember: It's called a "Bugsmasher" - not a "Buzzardsmasher." <g>

Wild turkeys can fly, not very far but they can. While shooting one
Eastern Regionals at Quantico from the 1000 yard line I managed to whack
a crow in flight about 600 yards downrange..........sheer dumb luck, big
puff of feathers and bird bits.

coolest thing i ever saw was a pidgeon land on the third

Our battalion ops sergeant killed a raven with his motorcycle helmet at
highway speed - he managed to stay upright, but he was a little shaken for

I thought it was Herb that came in and said "I swear to God, I thought
turkeys could fly", or something to that effect. But my memory could be

Yeah - they only lifted across the road and then landed.

Was recently surprised by a roadrunner doing the same thing - I thought
they were ground-bound as well, but I recently saw one cruise over a fence.

I had one hit ME once...I was cruising slowly off base out east one
night when a big brown blob sailed over my windshield. I hit the
brakes, and the second one leaped straight into my right rear fender.
Glad it was a rental...

I think that the guy in the pickup behind me must have clubbed it out
with a Maglite and thrown it in the back...it was stunned and kicking in
the street the first time I looked, the second time it was gone and the
guy was getting back in his truck.

I took a one inch nut in the forehead at about 75 mph on the highway
once. It disloged from a semi goin the opposite direction and hit me
just above my right eye, between my glasses and my helmet. I saw it
come loose an hit the deck...I had managed to avoid it, but my pal in
front of me rode over it, kicked it back up, and it hit me. Don't know
why the thing didn't crack my skull open...but I didn't do more than
flinch and stayed upright.

It wasn't until we got to his place and I removed my helmet and he saw
the dried blood and the gash that he figured out had happened...

This raven was sitting on the ground (well, probably on part of the
target or something, not the actual ground) when my friend dropped the
ordnance on it, I think from an F/A-18. It wasn't a bird strike in
flight.

Now THAT would have been REALLY impressive -- taking a bird out of mid-air with

Jack rabbits are better dispatched via the "rabbit rodeo" -- a "road trip" into
the Nevada desert prior to the first brief of the day at Fallon, armed to the
teeth and with plenty of ammo... :-)

I took out four seagulls with a T44 one night doing a practice approach at
Navy Dallas (I didn't know seagulls flew at night). We did a "flashlight
visual inspection", noted what appeared to be minor damage to the leading
edge and wing tip (the light still worked), and determined to return to NAS
Corpus.

Bad idea, as it turned out. The impacts not only damaged the starboard
leading edge but fractured the wing spar. The aircraft was in rebuild for
almost 90 days.

Beechcraft never could build a wing spar worth a good a ****.

A U.S Air Guard C-130 took out about a hundred red-wing blackbirds that were
feeding in the marsh along the south part of the runway at NAS Dallas
several years ago. We had to close the airfield and do a FOD walkdown to
pick up all the pieces-parts. To borrow from BtVS, "EWWW!!!"

Herb hatched the plan, Les Nessman was the field reporter during the
colour commentary. Les was pretty funny describing the mayhem as 15-20
turkeys pounded into cars etc.. at the shopping Mall. Herb used the "As God
is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." I believe Mr. Carlson
repeated the "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." to the
SPCA investigator.

Flew outta VaBch on a hurrivac, F-4J, VF-33. I left with Jeff Giddings in the
other A/C, flew to Wright-Patt. When we landed we both noticed that his jet
smelled 'fishy'...saw that he ate a seagull probably on takeoff. Feathers and
guts and such all over the intake, nose cone of the engine. Engine worked
fine....those J-79s!!
