How could the Iranian aircraft have "buzzed the Navy ship" when he was
at least 1000 yards away at closest approach?

Very rarely did a Soviet aircraft ever get that close to a carrier.
And you can bet there was at least one F/A-18 with the Iranian.
BTW what kind was the "jet". Most maritime aircraft are turbo-props.

Don't these happen quite a bit? I recall the Russians and US/UK liked
to drop in on each other quite a bit (The Russians are back at it, at
least with the UK.) Kodak moments rather than shootouts thank God.

The US would think nothing about doing the same to an Iranian vessel in
international waters. Why is this even news?

Sorry, I watched a P2V Neptune do a brush down of the antennas on
three Soviet Missile Range ships and crank in the after burner as it
cleared the last one. Laundry day for the Sovs.

The P2 used his JATO system to blast by those ship and the noise is
awsome.
