Is it common practice to NOTAM a field if there is a competition? How
'bout for smaller contests? or friendly weekend gathering?
GA
Yes, especially if the field is not a dedicated gliderport. This has
always been done, iirc, at the regionals at Parowan.

True, but in the case of Parowan I believe the NOTAM was required not
because there was a contest, but because the airport was closed at
certain times of the day because there was a contest.
In any case It's a good idea to use a NOTAM to make other pilots aware
of the contest activity.

We send e-mails/faxes/letters to interested local aviation concerns
that might have traffic in the area of start circles and two NOTAMs to
flight service. One is an advisory concerning heavy glider traffic in
the vicinity of RASHE intersection from 12 to 2 local. This one can be
made by the soaring organization. The other NOTAM closes the airport
from 10-2 local and can only be submitted by authorized airport
personnel
Our advisory letter goes to the chief pilots of the three commuter
airlines at University Park, the airport, the Life Flight helo people,
and the FSDO.
It doesn't take much time, it's free and it might save a life.
