Might it be some type of crop dusting equipment?

The curved things are skids to prevent the wingtips from hitting the
ground on a wonky landing.

The first pic identifies the aircraft as a Curtiss JN-6HB.
IOW it was a single-control bomber trainer.
What sort of racks would such a machine need?

Simple racks for a bomb about the size of a mortar, or a little larger.
Alternatively, when on a strictly training mission, a marker round, that
would be easy to see how your hits were landing.
