What Jet from the 50's or 60's do you wish you could have flown?

F-4 Phantom.

F-8U3, AKA Crusader III, AKA Super Crusader. Better performance than the
F-4, but its early propensity for duct rumble (and possibly its lack of a
spare engine) tilted the playing field toward the Phantom. In the Navy's
defense, the F-4 had growth potential, the F-8 III would have been the end
of the road for the Crusader. But what an airplane!!!

Hey Guy's what about F-1h, F-9f, F-4d, F-3h (with a better engine) F-7u,
F-2h, F-1j..
I'd have loved to fly any of those..

Any of them . . . (rueful grin) . . .

Near-sightedness kept me out of the game . . .

Maybe one day, I'll give in to a mid-life crisis and buy a war-bird
ride . . . just so I can know that I once had a taste of what could
have been.

Feeling happy nonetheless & wishing all of you blue skies.

F-104 -- a friend of mine flew them and thought they were the greatest
at the time. He really likes the F-16, but considers the T-38 to have
too heavy controls.

>>Roger that! In the 60's I flew the F104A with the J79-19 engine -
oh, mama!
..9 to M2.0 in 27 miles, 1' 45", 1000 pounds of fuel. On takeoff, brake
release to .97M, 43 seconds. Same, to 45000, 90 seconds. M2.0 cruise
at FL730 in 3/4 AB. Not too shabby! I want to fly one some more! Come
on, Powerball ticket!

In order of preference, for no logical reasons....

1. Vampire, as a child the shape just seemed magical.
2. Sabre (Australian version), brilliant looking and with great performance.
3. Me-262 with better engines, that is a classic modern looking shape. Must
have scared many an allied aircrew.

Oops, how could I forget mentioning the Maachi........... Loved watching the
Roulettes practice over my house....... That would have to slot in between
the Vampire and the Sabre, except that I realise a Maachi ejection (worse
case scenario) would take my legs off...........

Just making sure, but you really didn't mistype FL730?

after running some tests against a U2 - both uf us had full pressure
suits and they were quite comfortable. The Dash 19 engined 104As
cruised at about 3/4 AB at 315IAS and M2.0 (Eyeball approach to best
L/D). I regret we didn't assess maneuverabiity up there but certainly
there was more power avalable.
