While mucking about the web today I chanced upon Stephen Coonts' web site.
There's a good page there in which Coonts talks about what it takes to
become and succeed as a military aviator. Since RAMN gets occasional
questions on this subject, here's a link to his page:

Although focused on pilots, Coonts' advice also applies to anyone
considering a military career, either as an officer or enlisted, in any
branch.
