I've been playing with $10 key cams lately.
Here's the result of last sunday:

Have fun.
Don't forget to turn up the volume.

The video is nice.
I'm curious about the camera. Do you have a link to a source or details?
Thanks,

Hi Andreas,
Amazing quality for such a low cost camera. How did you attach it to
the glider and how long will it record for?

I simply used double-sided adhesive tape to attach the camera and
fibre tape as an additional safety measure. The camera is so light and
small that you can attach it anywhere.
It records about 45 minutes until the battery runs out, but it can use
up to 32 GB cards which would allow about 8 hrs of video.
I'm using a 4 GB card.

Hi Derek,
an annotation concerning the quality of the cameras:
They are even better than what shows up in YouTube (at the moment I'm
far from having perfected the video codec optimization, YouTube
demands some special formats to achieve best quality).
If you look closely (especially on the Ka-8 video), you can see that
one camera has a sharpness problem on the upper right edge.

Flaws and all, still very impressive for the price. I'm going to try
to get 4 or 5 of them ASAP!

I had ordered several of these from Ebay last week with the intention
of trying just this. As a couple of posters have pointed out, they are
known as 808 cameras and the chuck lohr link has lots of very useful
information. Do some research before you buy, because there are subtle
but important differences between the types of cameras fitted in these
little keychain cameras. Apparently, the best is Version (or type) 3.
They can be told apart by the resolution of the video they produce and
the postion and colour of the (removable) date stamp they produce.
They are apparently made using rejected mobile phone components and
model car and glider folk have been using them for a while. They are
small enough and cheap enough to stick on various places on a full-
sized glider to get some great videos. I've paid anything from $AU1 to
$10 for these on Ebay, most of which didn't come with memory - I
intend to use memory cards I already have rather than trust to
probably fake cards bundled with some from china and HK.

Hi Andreas - I tried to post a link on the coments page for the video
(nice and clear by the way). Here's the message I tried to post:
Neat stuff - amazingly clear! You can change the date stamp easily
(see here:
http://www.chucklohr.com/808/#SetDateTime).
Also, please tell me how you attached the cameras to the outside of
the glider?

I know - but so far i haven't figured out why the camera looses its
date from time to time.
I've been playing with a filter for virtual dub - it removes nearly
all of the time stamp.

Simple: double sided adhesive tape. The camera is so light and small
that this is completely sufficient.

I have ordered 5 of them, and they should arrive in plenty of time for
our club's dry lake auto-tow weekend. I plan to put at least 3 on my
glider!
Thanks for making me aware of these neat little recorders!

I paid the big bucks ($20.00 each) for tested v3 cameras from
WingmanRC in Arizona. I bought Kingston Class 4 4 gig micro SD cards
from New Egg.com. Shipping was very cheap and very fast from both
places. I orderd them Wednesday and got them today. Total for 5
cameras, one USB microsd holder, and 5 4 gig micro SD chips, including
all shipping, handling, and taxes was right around $150.00
I've tested 3 of the 5 (I ran out of USB ports to charge them) and so
far, they're just fine. I'm going to the field tomorrow, and intend to
fly with them taped all over the plane.

I flew with three stuck on my glider today. I am thoroughly impressed
with the video quality! There's a young club member with a Mac, and
Final Cut Professional, who has volunteered to do some editing.
I really like the camera view you get by taping it to the top of the
horizontal stab out near the tip. You get a pretty good view up
ahead, with some wing, the cockpit, and the wheel in view.

I'm using Kingston Class 4 4 gig microSD's. I bought them from New

each).

who will be the first to repackage this unit, do away with the funky
button pushing-light flashing wondering if it is set
right..............and install the unit in a slick shell with a small

I hope it still "is".
It "was" during my tenure there from 1983 till 1986. Lovely, just
lovely. It's located on the western edge of the Rhine river valley
with vineyards covering the rolling slopes of the valley. To the west
are low mountains with castle ruins dotting their peaks. Back in my
time there, the prevalent wine was Riesling. Don't know about now,
but the Rieslings were WONDERFUL!
