I'm looking for a complete list of all USA competitions
for 2011, including those with tentative dates. Lots
of major upcoming meets are not listed on SSA site
(18m nationals, open nationals, Uvalde pre-worlds).
Can anybody point me at this info ?
Thanks,
Best Regards, Dave "YO electric"

Thanks Hank, and to all those who emailed
me the info with the caveat:
"warning, this is a state secret"
It would be great if we could get the schedule
public as soon as info is available, with tentative
dates or bids so marked...
Thanks again,

Aha! That's the piece I was missing when I asked the question
about process a while back. I didn't realize that it all goes
to the SSA BOD to vote on the schedule (which isn't pointed
out on the SSA web page, I'll note).
I assume the pre-worlds will be connected to the 18M Nats
somehow, to take advantage of resources available? It looks
like the European championships gear up in July so June
dates make sense.

Yeah, one or two of us racers still have jobs, and yes, it can take a
year of advance notice to keep two weeks free. Posting the tentative
schedule ahead of approval would really help, and I hope Linda and the
site selection committee will be able to do that next year.

I agree with John. As a still working for a living airline pilot I
have to bid for my vacation weeks 1 year prior. Not having even a
tentative schedule makes the process very difficult. I guessed on the
Uvalde Super Regional dates and guessed wrong. I'm not sure what the
big secret is when it comes to posting the "Tentative/Draft" upcoming
contest dates and sites.

There were conflicts that needed to be resolved before these could be
firmed up. Publishing what the organizers first suggest would get long
lookers information that quite well might change. Then- more
unhappiness.

I have the same scheduling issues with my daughters school. A better
solution would be to be confirming the 2012 schedule at this autumn's
BOD meeting so that there is 18'ish months between the final published
schedule and the first event. I attend business conferences that know
their dates for the next 2 or three years. Makes planning much
easier.
On the other side, I am very sympathetic to everyone involved in this
process. It is a lot of work and getting sites to commit 9 months
ahead of time is hard enough. Two plus years may be impossible.

Organizers have the same issue(s) as competitors; need as much lead
time as possible. Too many politics being played out by the selection
committee and IMO if this continues it will be yet another
contributing factor to the decline of participants and organizers.

Sure. I am one of many folks helping with organizing the 2011 15
meter nationals in Logan. The paperwork was done as needed and on
time. We were told a selection was imminent over the summer but never
heard. Kept inquiring, same answers with different reasons. Verbally
told it would be rewarded to Logan and confirm would be sent, never
was. had the contest included in the 2011 schedule via the SSA and
someone had it pulled down. Still waiting for confirmation, There
are many more specific that should not be aired on public venues such
as RAS. Bottom line is that we will be ready for a great contest in
Logan in 2011, just waiting to get the confirmation so we can whip
into action to get all the setup stuff done. Email me offline if you
desire

I wonder how many pilots from Europe will come to pre-worlds in Uvalde
if they will have the European Gliding Championships (Open, 18m, and
15m) at the same time.

So California Region 12 is formulating a Regionals at Inyokern CA for
8/27/11 to 9/2/11. If you have 2 weeks you can also attend the
following Experimental Soaring Association meeting and fly the Dust
Devil Dash. Three great soaring events in 2 weeks!

Guess that will depend on who is serious about learning a bit more
about Uvalde before the WGC.

Another author mentioned conflicts with his daughter's school
schedule. In the olden days when traditional families attended
national soaring contests to crew for their [exclusively male] pilots,
organizers tried hard to avoid conflicts with the US school system. In
recent years that's become a non-issue. Too bad. I'm knocked out of
both national contests I'd otherwise consider--Sports and Standard--
because they are set before school is out.
I've flown crewless for some years but this summer I brought one of my
daughters with me to Hobbs and...she loved it. She can't wait for next
summer's contest! If I were in contention for a spot on the US Team,
my perspective would be different. But she and her sister are 16 and I
figure the window of opportunity to share another contest with them is
pretty narrow. So I've already written off Chilhowee and Cordele--
places I've flown happily in the past. I know both sites have valid
reasons for scheduling their contests so early. And it may well be
that I'm the only pilot thus affected. But I still wistfully recall a
time when multi-time national champion and school teacher George
Moffat would finish out the school year before rushing off to fly the
[single] national contest, in what's now the Open Class.
Nothing lasts forever.

Has anyone else noticed that the SSA calendar for sanctioned contests
for 2011 shows that contests are only being held on the east coast?
Are there no sanctioned contests west of the Mississippi or is

At this point the list is preliminary. Last year the schedule didn't
fill in
until after the start of the year.

Looks like the calendar is being updated today. yes Logan showed up

I feel your pain, brother. My wife's a school teacher so she cannot
attend contests scheduled during the school year. It's a real shame: She
loves coming to the contests and will even tolerate crewing for me. Her
favorite friends are the wives and children of contest pilots. In 2010
we hit it lucky with 3 contests happening at times when she could come
with me.
All the blame can't be laid on the contest organizers. Most school
systems start earlier and go later these days. My wife's school started
the first week of August this year! Year-round school is still being
advocated by many (including the oval office) even though it has pretty
much been abandoned everywhere it has been tried.
My wife doesn't think much of my suggestion of recruiting a couple
college coed's to crew in her place...
