I'm wondering if an instrument rating is a required to be a CFI for aircraft
(not CFII) just CFI VFR only. The regulation is alittle unclear to me states
"An instrument rating OR privileges on that person's pilot certificate that
are appropriate to the flight instructors rating saught." The OR is what is
throwing me off because I think if you were VFR commercial pilot you would
have the appropriate privileges to conduct CFI privlages in VFR conditions
only. Please correct me I'm most likely not understanding this correctly
thanks for your help so much. I've read sources some state yest you do need
instument rating and other which state a commercial certificate and have no
mention of an instrument rating.

You need an instrument rating - the OR is to cover people who have an ATP
(there is no instrument rating on an ATP certificate).

The previous message is correct. The instrument rating is required if you
use a commercial certificate as the prereq for CFI airplane.
