I happened to catch a very good program on the National Geographic
channel about the Swiss Air 111 crash in 1998. Check the listings
to see if it is being repeated...it was well done and worth seeing.
I never heard the final conclusions of the investigation. I
recall hearing that they dreged up 1-million parts of the aircraft,
and learned that a second salvage operation brought up a second
million parts. In the end, the conclusion was rather chilling.
Despite the crew not taking the fire seriously for the first 10
minutes or so of the emergency, experts concluded that they still
could not have made it on the ground safely had they started
towards Halifax right away. The fire spread too rapidly, and
they would have been short of the airport by about 3 minutes.
