I seem to remember that back in the '70s there was a requirement for
an ATP certificate to act as PIC for aircraft weighing over 12,500
pounds. I also seem to remember that the corporate jets were kept
below the 12,500-pound limit for this reason. I can no longer find
this requirement in te FARs.

Has the reg. been changed, or am I just having a senior moment?

The requirement then and now is for a "type rating", not for an ATP.
A Private Pilot can have a type rating for an aircraft over 12,500#.
This is also a requirement for turbojet aircraft.
