View Full Version : What's your avorite airliner?

In an effort to get some on-topic messages in RTA, I ask "What is your
favorite airliner"? I remember a UA A320 I flew on a couple years ago to be
quite pleasant.
(And I ask if any of the many local trolls answer this message, you others
please don't encourage them.)

B757, not really sure why but I think it is just the way it looks. It looks
like a true airliner, high off the ground sleek lines, can fly in and out of
most airports and it can go the distance.

Without question, sitting in Business Class on an Airbus 340. Love the plane
and feel it has the most comfortable seat in business class in the industry.

Westjet's 737-700's are pretty nice.
I can't get over the magnitude of the 747 though. Was only ever on one
once when I was 6, but I'll never forget it. That was back in the fun
days when they let you check out the cockpit.
727's too. So loud :)
If there's any airline pilots ret'd or otherwise who read this stuff
know that one of those kids you showed around up there is following in
your footsteps.

I guess it depends what your criteria are...
Long haul economy - B767 (because of seating)
Long haul business - B747 upstairs (quiet and only 12 seats in the few
remaining small bubbles)
Long haul first - A340-500 Emirates
Short haul economy - A320/A319 (seem slightly more spacious the 737)
Short haul business/first - Delta B767 (a very few transcontinental US
routes using business elite cabins provide very generous seating)

That second part of your comment depends on the airline and is of no
relation with the aircraft used. So you'd probably like to add the airline
which Business Class product you enjoyed.
Greetz,
*I heard the A340 is very quiet*

My last few flights were with an MD-11 (of KLM). I sat rather in the back
and the sound of the engines (and evern more of the tail engine) is great.
Hearing an engine spool up and give all power is magnificent.
Greetz,
*last flights were in 2002 :-(*

RJ-85 as flown by NW Airlink (Mesaba). Very cool looking plane, has GREAT
first class seats and the best coach seats of any plane I have ever been on.
Mesaba has them configured 3-2 instead of the 3-3 common in Europe, so nice
wide seats and plent of legroom. And they makes some seriously wierd noises as
the flaps go in and out! :-) Only downside is they are slooooow. Westbound
into the winter wind PWM-DTW it would almost be faster to get out and walk....

What he said. Best domestic first class seats, IMHO, and more
comfortable than some international business class seats I've seen.

I'm with you, Jim, these turbine guys don't appreciate true beauty on the

Based on appearance only, I think a lot of people would agree with you. It
is a very graceful looking airliner, although the 757-3 kills the effect.

Nonsense. The business class seats on EgyptAir's Airbus 340s are
nothing to write home about.

EgyptAir? Most comfortable seat in the industry? Ha!

To me, it makes no difference which type of aircraft I fly on as long as
it gets me where I am going safety and reasonably on time.

I love it when I get the odd chance to fly a triple-seven. Looking
WAY down at those huge engines and that giant fuselage. It's an
impressive plane.

Tri Stars. (commonly referred to as "try to starts")
Those Rolls RB211's were a little finicky in high/dry conditions like
SLC. Sometime they'd need a "jump start".
The L1011 airframe was built like a tank.
I was also fond of MD-11's. (especially in first class)

Original message gone, replying to reply
Since this is turning into a nostalgia exercise, let me throw in
Convair 990. It felt and sounded like a rocket. I think it was the
first commercial fan-jet, which gave it its unique sound. Only flew it
once and it made an impression.

Seconded! I was a bit surprised that no one else had mentioned
the 777 yet; I love 'em. Big, roomy, quiet, one of the best
overhead bin designs ever, and the majority of 'em I've been on
had the personal video screens in the seatbacks in coach.
First or business in a 777 is wonderful.

I was spoilt, because the first airliner I flew on was a spanking new United
777, on its maiden commercial flight. Clean, spacious (it was a new flight
recently added to the schedule so there were only about 50 of us on it!),
the entertainment system worked properly, etc. Hugely powerful, too. I've
flown on various airliners since (737, 747, 757, 767 and more 777s, plus
various Airbuses, DC-10s, and so on) and I prefer the 777 out of all of
them.

So how does the RJ-85 differ from the BAe 146 of the 1980s?
My personal nominaton: DC-8-62. I flew on one from SJC to
HNL in 1982 (United; probably one of their last narrowbody
flights between the Mainland and Hawaii), and I remember
that it was so quiet, I didn't even realize that the
engines had been started until we started taxiing. All
I could hear was the gentle hiss of the air conditioning.
I was dissappointed that the plane didn't have those cool
1960s-era DC-8 seats with the reading lights in the upper
corners of the seatbacks, thugh.

Boeing 777, but I am biased. I worked as an engineer on the AIMS
Display System for the flight deck.

As a planespotter - 747-400, 757-200, everything else.
As a passenger - 777. (i get my first ride on an A330-300 in 2 weeks
so can't say anything about it yet.)

I agree about the DC-8s. I flew on a re-engined United DC-8 from Oakland to
HNL around 1990....best coach seats I ever had, wide and with great legroom.

I'm old-school: Either a 727-200 or an Elton Eleven.
The old Delta widget scheme made any plane look like it was moving even when
it was standing still.
The up-until-1982 Braniff scheme--no matter what color--was the shiznit,
too.

I have always liked the 737 (any variant)--of course that would be my
choice for a modern one. Of all time, it would probably have to be the
Super Constelation.
