On the cover of the Western US Pilot's Guide there is a picture
of a fascinating airfiled, anyone know which it is ?

I think that's in Hawaii. I remember reading something about it some

While it has been some time since I flew into it, it looks like Half Moon
Bay on the California coast midway between San Francisco and Monterey. It is
a great airport for a fly-in lunch or dinner when the coastal fog is out.
There are a number of good seafood restaurants within easy walking distance
of the south end of the runway, where there is temporary parking for light
planes.

Hmmmm. First it's a vaugely-remembered strip somewhere in Hawaii, and
now it's Half Moon Bay :-). Well, as posted earlier, it's Shelter Cove
(0Q5) in Northern California, just up by the Lost Coast (an airport
I've flown in to many times), a great destination for fly-ins when
it's not fogged in.

If anyone doesn't believe that it's Shelter Cove, take a look at
AIrnav's page for Shelter Cove -- <http://www.airnav.com/airport/0Q5>
or one of the crappy photos I've taken of the place like
<http://www.alameda-aero.com/gallery/images/sheltercove.jpg> (which
doesn't do the place justice -- it's a really beautiful part of the
world).

As to why it's not Half Moon Bay, I'll leave that as an exercise for
the reader :-). But yes, Half Moon Bay is also a great fly-in place, but
actually flying in can be difficult given the omnipresent coastal fog.

My apologies, Hamish is right. :-( Having not had the pleasure of landing at
Shelter Cove, Half Moon Bay was the only airport in my experience on the
West Coast that appeared to fit and it has been over ten years since I last
landed there, having moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1995. Just shows that
the visual memory fades over time.

Ah, don't feel too bad -- they're easy airports to mistake for each
other, especially when the damn fog rolls in :-). Anyway, absent the
fog, they're both great fly-in destinations (except that Half Moon Bay
is only a few minutes' flight from here, which lessens the adventure),
with picnic and / or cafe-style food within easy walking distance.
Shelter Cove even has a decent camping spot right next to the departure
end of runway 13.... But watch for that fog -- in both places it can
appear almost out of nowhere within minutes, meaning no VFR flying for
possibly the next few days. As I discovered.
