It is with a heavy heart that I have to report that Udo Rumpf passed
away last night. He had been battling cancer for the last few years
and fought hard to beat it. Unfortunately, various treatments were not
successful. I will let you know about funeral arrangements in the next
day or so.

I have been dreading this report for many months. I never met Udo,
but we corresponded via email on a number of subjects, all dealing
with glider performance improvement of course.

God Speed Udo.

So sorry to hear this. Udo was a Guru and great source of knowledge
to those of us with Schreder sailplanes, always helpful with advice
from his extensive experiences modifiying and tuning up his own HP-18.

Kindest regards Udo.

Condolences to his family and friends. Udo was always a source of
inspiration for me. His knowledge, skill and gentle manner will be
missed.

He was a good guy. What a sadness.

I never met him, just emails and talked to Udo on the phone. Udo
bought a MKIII and Quiet Vent a couple of years ago, then called to
discuss them and tell of an adjustable air deflector he came up with
so the additional incoming air didn't directly hit his shoulder. He
followed up, sending a diagram of his invention and freely giving the
idea to me. I asked why he would do that when he told me of his fight.
I didn't even know him and this makes me feel like crying.

I will think of Udo and say a prayer for him every time I use the one
man rig system he made for me.
A wonderful man that will be missed.

My favorite Udo memory is going to retrieve him out of Caesar Creek.
My partner and I arrived to find that
Udo had charmed the lady farmer to the point where he was sitting next
to his glider in a comfortable chair with a cool
drink and eating a sandwich she had provided. Just to keep the image
complete, we told him to continue with his lunch.
5 minutes later with no words spoken, his glider was in the trailer
and ready to travel(I used to own that '24 and both partner and I had
assembled it dozens of times).
Udo professed to being amazedand appreciative and bought us a very
pleasant dinner that night.
I'll long remember our rainy day talks about gliders and models.
Udo was a very nice man.
Good Finish ET

Like you, I never met Udo in person. I started communicating with him about 12 years ago, shortly after the Schreder Sailplane Designs website was created. His "Super HP-18" article was one of the first to appear on the site. There are 21 hints authored by Udo in the Construction Tips section of the site.

Udo had great intellect and was willing to freely share his knowledge.

I hope some one who knows him well will write biography articles for Soaring and Free-Flight. In the meanwhile I pass my condolences to his wife Linda and all who loved him and/or called him a friend.

Respectfully,

Wayne

Blue Skies to you Udo. I never met the man, but corresponded with him
via e-mail on some design ideas and such. I always enjoyed reading
about his homebuilding projects.

I was lucky enough to meet Udo when I purchased his first built SuperHP18.
Indeed a gentleman with a very fine intellect - I was always hoping he
would get around to producing his own 15m racer to take on the German
machines, which he told me about when I first met him.
I am sure Mike G (the 2nd owner of the Super HP18) would join me in
thanking Udo for the many enjoyable hours spent flying Udo's creation in
the Candian Rockies.
I am sure Udo will be kept busy 'reprofiling' a few of those angels
wings!!!!!

A sad loss to Soaring and of course to Linda his wife . Udo put as
much into Soaring as he got out . His desire to understand what
improvements were possible and his great workmanship in applying those
findings to modifying / refinishing his gliders and making the rigging
aids he developed and sold were proof of his skills . No doubt he
loved to fly too.
We'll all miss you Udo , beginning at the next "Seniors "

Never met but shared some e-mail and forum exchanges over the years
covering ground launching and turbulator placement on Wortmann
airfoils.

He clearly loved soaring.

Many years ago, when I started using the term "Resourceful Builder,"
complete with proper-noun capitalization, it was Udo I originally had
in mind. If a thing could be built in the home workshop, Udo would
figure out how to do it. I will miss him very much.

I had the pleasure of knowing Udo from the Seniors and other contests
we shared. Always a gentleman, he always had that spark in his eyes
that made talking with him a pleasure. Udo's passing is a loss for
soaring, on both sides of the border.

I have flown many Region 3 Contests with Udo and always enjoyed his
stories.
His wife Linda crewed with at every contest and truly enjoyed crewing.
I remember both
of them at the 2006 Region 3 Contest in Glens Falls, NY, where I was
the CD. The day we
got "tthrown" out of the airport Udo and Linda was quoted in the
newspaper (with their photo on the front page) as saying we will never
be back to
Glens Falls where they treat soaring pilots like that. Interestingly
Udo was the only one to
complete the task that day.

A great guy that truly will be missed.

Sad news, indeed!
I met Udo at several contests at Casear Creek, OH. It was always a
pleasure to talk to him after the day's task. He was also an active
contributor to the winch/ground launch discussion groups and we
exchanged many e-mails on this subject. Truely a man of many talents

No sendoff of Udo would be complete without mentioning that he was a
man of strong opinions! I witnessed that in 2003 when six of us landed
in the same field during the Sports Class Nationals. None of us was
very pleased, of course, watching other competitors tiptoe into and
out of the turnpoint we had failed to achieve. As the trailers began
to arrive and de-rigging began, complicated by our having plopped
varying distances out in an enormous plowed field, there was naturally
some enthusiastic jockeying for advantage (since we couldn't compete
on points, the urge to de-rig and get out of there as fast as possible
prevailed). It was fun to watch the personalities of strong-willed
soaring pilots emerge, Udo's (and mine) among them. :)

Not long after, he and I began to exchange ideas and data on the ASW
24. Soon after those Elmira Nationals, he had bought UH's glider. I've
still got a few photos somewhere he sent me of his first modifications
to that airplane to improve its performance. We had both dabbled in
building one-man rigging systems and that was another area where we
shared ideas and opinions.

I'm sad to hear of his passing. Condolences, kind thoughts, and fond
memories to his family. Udo will be missed.

Hello Everyone;

In honour of Udo we have organized a lunch gathering of Udo's friends
on the 9th of January at the following location:

Fred and Gudrun Schwarze
#1430 Salem Road
Prince Edward County, Ontario.

The easiest way to get there is as follows:

1) take the Wooler Road exit off the 401 (#522)
2) follow the highway south (through the traffic lights at Highway #2)
to where it terminates at Highway 33.
3) Turn right onto #33 and travel south--through Carrying Place--past
the Department of Defense tower field--until you can see the cottages
on Weller's Bay.
4) Turn left onto Salem Road and go about about 4 miles in--on the
north side of the road. Their telephone number is 613-969-8123.

Arrivals should be planned for about 11:45.

For further information, please contact me at
