View Full Version : Glider Aerobatic Pilots, CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA

I am a glider aerobatic pilot in Sacramento, CA. I fly an SZD-59.
I am looking for other aerobatic pilots who might be interested in
participating in an aerobatic contest. There are several IAC chapters
that put on small contests in CA, NV. They tell me that they would be
happy to include gliders. To make it a meaningful event for gliders
we would need at least three pilots to participate.
Anyone out there interested?

I have two potential glider acro pilots.
Another idea is to have just a fun gathering of glider acro pilots and
planes at my soaring site (Williams, CA) or another site if it is more
central to the people who are interested.

Guy,
Any plans for Acrofest #2? The first one was fun!

The question is, "Will there be an AcroFest #2?"
Perhaps. For those in the dark, AcroFest was a weekend gathering at
Williams, CA gliderport for an introduction to glider acro flight. We
had a couple hours of presentation on the rules regarding acro flight,
the stresses applied to airframes by acro flight, the load limits
specified by manufacturers for various aircraft, the physiology of
acro flight and ways to cope with airsickness. Then we spent the
afternoon in our two ASK-21s providing introductions to acro flight
with a routine that emphasized speed control, pausing between every
figure, and how to upright a glider that has been placed into an
inverted attitude.
No one got sick and there were lots of smiling faces.
If enough people express an interest, we will make an AcroFest #2
happen. Talk it up. Have people post their interest on this forum or
on the Williams forum.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm also a SZD-59 owner in Canada. It might
be to far for me to drive, but I'd like to know if there is an event on
the off chance I can make it.

If we want to have an acro gathering, we must all fly the same level
program to make it meaningful. You need to have at least three pilots
flying at the same level to make the awards meaningful. I am just
starting and am flying at the Sportsman level. I could fly at the
Intermediate level if needed.

Ok ladies and gentlemen.
We are proposing an AcroFest #2 at Williams, California on Saturday-
Sunday, May 7-8.
Instead of a fixed curriculum, we are making flights more custom with
an emphasis on unusual attitudes. Maximum slips, what happens with
crossed controls, how to burn altitude really, really fast, what
happens when you are too slow and too banked in a thermal.
However, we would like to have as many acro private pilots as possible
show up to wow the crowds and bond with fellow acro nuts.
We are looking for feedback, suggestions, and participants.
Williams is a private airfield so non of the public airport hassles.

Williams Gliderport ACROFEST #2 will be Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3.
We will fly both Saturday and Sunday.
We will have only one ASK-21 this year.
Saturday evening we will have the technical discussions, videos, and
presentations while eating dinner.
Private acro glider pilots are welcome to bring your planes and show
off to the crowd.
There will not be a fee for the event. The only costs will be flight
time and tows.
Rolls, loops, wingovers, stall turns, half cubans, unusual attitudes.
Of course, to do acro you must have an unusual attitude!
For questions, call Guy Acheson 916-214-6663

Guy,
I would suggest starting a separate "acrofest" thread. It will give
the event better visibility.

AcroFest #2. Saturday-Sunday April 2-3
Calling all glider acro junkies! Calling all glider pilots wanting
to
have a glider acro experience!
This will be our second glider aerobatic workshop.
Mallory Lynch (CFIG) and Guy Acheson (private pilot) will be your
mentors in the back seat.
We will have one ASK-21 for dual flights. Pilots are encouraged to
bring their own planes for acro.
If you want to experience glider acro, this is a great opportunity.
If you want instruction in basic glider aerobatics, this is your
workshop.
Flight time sign-ups thru Noelle at Williams. Call her to schedule.
530-473-5600
Saturday evening presentation with dinner. The presentation will be
acro videos, acro technical stuff, technique workshops, and a demo of
flying acro with Condor.
Food to be determined. Might be pizza/subway/chinese...the group to
decide.
Mallory and Guy will be the flight mentors. We fly for food. You only
pay for tows and airtime.
We will be scheduling a flight every 45 minutes. The flight plan is
to
be decided between the pilot and the mentor. You set the agenda.
If pilots are taking multiple flights we want them to alternate
between Mallory and Guy as the mentor.
For questions call Guy at 916-214-6663 or .
I'm looking forward to a looping good time!
