Komet trailer tongue

Questions for those of you with later model (extruded aluminum sides)
Komet trailers. On mine the tongue clunks when braking moderately or
starting to roll as the tongue takes up slack--is this normal? Also,
the hitch rotates to the right as far as it can go when trailering--is
this normal? Would appreciate your thoughts.

There is a damper inside the tongue. Eventually it fails, and these
noises are probably an indicator of that. On the Wings And Wheels
website Tim has put a diagram and some directions on how to replace
this part. I have replaced a couple of these on Cobra trailers.
The tongue is manufactured by Alko, and there are many different
shocks so contact the Komet distributor with information on the
trailer year and all the numbers on the tongue that you can find.

On my Eberle I removed the strut and had the Monroe rep match it to
one of their steering struts. It was slightly different than the old
German version but works great. I researched the German version by
the info stamped on the housing. It turns out the company now builds
stabilizers for tanks. My strut was long ago out of production! Now
it is all smoooth sailing.

Probably, you need to adjust your brakes as well as check the damper.

If you don't replace the dampnere, the brakes will come on hard as you
slow down, this will make the hitch pull out and release the brakes.
Then it all starts over again. Roll the window down and apply some
auto brakes, you may hear, "chirp.......chirp......chirp" as the above
trailer action is happening and also BTW eating your trailer tires.

I think it might be binding in it's cheek. Lots of folks round here
swear by SuperLube, but in San Francisco AstroGlide is the #1 of
choice. ;)
