SPOT Mounting - Parachute

I purchased one of the new SPOT’s (SPOT Satellite Messenger, sometimes
called SPOT II). As a fall-back, I have a few options for mounting it
directly on my ship, but I’d prefer a chute mount. I’ve read Allen
Silvers 2009 file on how NOT to attach it to a parachute, although
that file didn’t seem to say how/where was a good place to attach it.
I will talk to my rigger, but first wanted to check for actual
experience with the latest generation SPOT. I looked in ras for recent
posts on mounting the SPOT, but only found a set of posts in early
2009 and early 2010.
I’d like to check for experience last season with the newer units.
Specifically how well did parachute attachments work (good tracking),
and how/where on the chute was it attached?

I have the "new" SPOT as well and mount it in a similar location as is
shown in those pictures for the SMAK pack. I think I usually put my
spot on my left side, above the chest strap but low enough that it
doesn't cause issues like you read about with the parachute opening.
I picked up some velcro bands and use those to attache the SPOT to the
chute. I've never had any issues with satellite reception as long as
the SPOT is working otherwise.

I mount my SPOT 1 on the left sholder strap but only through the outer most
strap. In my Ventus I am laynig back and that gives a relatively flat
facing up and have had no issues of not seeing tracks. The outer most
strap on my chute is the one that is attached to the harness and the spot
will not interfere with the deployment.

My rigger added a webbing "hard point" on the left riser cover of a
couple of Mini Softies. The cover is only sewn to the harness on the
inside, velcroed on the outside to allow riser deployment. Position is
about perfect for the SPOT 1 that's on each. Best mount I found for
the older SPOT uses a modified pouch that Wings And Wheels used to
sell for the EBC 102 Personal ELT.
The SPOT 2 has it's own pouch so should be easier to mount on the hard
point.

I have several pair of jeans modified for flying. I have a had a pocket put
on the left leg just below the knee for my spot; right leg has a pocket for
my first aid kit - 2 things I want with me if I bail out. My glider has an
instrument pod rather than a panel. My lower legs have a clear view of the
sky thru the canopy. My Spot works great in this position and it's out of
the way. While it works for me, not a solution for everyone.

I use a small caribiner to attach my Spot 2 to the metal ring that my
chest strap clips into. I figure if the chest strap can clip in, so
can the Spot. I'm fairly reclined in my Kestrel and the Spot sits on
my chest looking upwards -- no issues getting reception. And I'd
rather have it with me instead of the ship, in case we get separated.

I initially flew with my SPOT I located on the top right of the chute
shoulder strap (45deg angle). Drop message rates were significantly
high... say 15-30 per cent .. sometimes higher. Flying a Discus 2A and
I suspect the carbon in the fuselage obscured coverage. When moving it
to the top of the instrument panel cover lying flat (hooked on by a
piece of tie wrap), error rates lowered to near zero. My 2 cents...

I flew the whole season last year with Spot 2 (over 300 hours).
It is mounted on my parachute strap below the problematic area
(verified by Allen Silver).
I am getting zero dropped messages (at least when reviewing my
messages after the flight, it is still possible some messages were
delayed by more than 10 minutes and then cought up).
Another concern I read before about Spot 2 was battery life. While
indeed it is shorter than Spot 1, it is still quiet reasonable. I
found out I need to replace mine every 100-150 flying hours.
The Spot 2 UI is much better than Spot 1 and the additional custom
message makes it much more useful for communicating with your crew, as
you can decide on 3 different course of actions based on the message
type (OK, Help or Custom).
