View Full Version : Cost of parachute repack ....

Here in Northern UT the master rigger many of us used to perform
parachute repacks passed away. Two other people have been identified,
both take a week or so to perform the job with one charging $60 and
the other charges $75.

I do not mind paying for good service, and with this only needed to be
done twice a year with the total costs equal to about 3 tows, these
costs are twice the price I am use to.

I am curious what other folks pay around the country.

Thanks in advance

Ron Gleason

Phoenix, AZ, USA. $60.

It seems the price went up a lot when the packing interval increased.
Got to keep riggers in beer money!

I'm in the Toronto, ON area.
I use a master rigger nearby who charged $60 last year, although a
pilot at my club says it's going to be $70 this year. Many of my
club's members use him, as well as many sport jumpers, so it's
sometimes a bit of a wait to get the repack.
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, ON (60 miles from
Toronto) has a rigger that charged $70 last year, although that
included admission to the museum that day.

We have a master rigger who is charging us $50
to repack our parachutes. It is normally done in
two days.

$70 in the Las Vegas NV area for repeat customers, ($10 discount).
Up from $60 a few years ago, but it stayed steady after the interval
increase.
Our repacks are less than 5% of the diggers annaul business. He gets
them done within a week.

I thought the factories specified that emergency chutes should be hung
for at least 24 hours or something like it, to get rid of last year's
creases. Is that no longer so, or not for some makes now?

I think I paid $65 at Strong Parachutes in Orlando. A reasonable fee for life insurance if you ask me.

JJ - the master rigger Ron is referring to who sadly passed away
charged us $35 for the repacks last year. That is why we are so
shocked at the "real world" pricing. He was not just a really nice
guy but it now looks like he was the least expensive repacker on the
block by a large margin.

We have been paying $50 at ParaPhernalia in Arlington, WA

I only pay $10 bucks in Florida. Ever since I had a nasty name calling
fight with my rigger, he has been trying to apologize by giving me a
discount. He even does it right away while I take a leak. Very quick
service. It makes him feel good as he always has a huge grin on his
face as I walk away.
Sad look too, as I drive away after a day of flying.
Next time I'm going to give him a $2 tip.

One of our club members, Jason Kanu, is a rigger. Most of us (Valley
Soaring in Middletown, NY) either give him our chutes at the annual
safety meeting or leave them in the club trailer for him to pick up.
The first time he repacked my chute, he identified a potentially
serious problem, took the time to demonstrate it to me, fixed it and
added only the cost of the part and shipping to the price of the
repack. He also provides training in the care and use of parachutes,
both at our safety meeting and individually throughout the year. He
charged $50 for the last repack, but I've been pushing him to raise
the price to match the level of service.

Funny how few people appreciate this - but if you want someone to stay
in the business and give you good service, it has to be worthwhile for
them. If you pay a reasonable price, everyone is OK. Try to nickel and
dime and you end up with a two bit service...

Just my .002 Euro.

10 bucks? Does it right away while you take a leak? Not much hang time, huh? Has a huge grin on his face as you talk away? Looks sad when you drive away at the end of the day? I don't think I would jump that canopy. You might pull the D ring and see socks and underwear in trail above you.

I asked the lady who was rigging chutes at the Senior Championships if she ever told people that if it didn't open, bring it back and she would rig it again for free? With all the confidence in the world she looked me in the eye and said, "If I rig it, it will open." We want to keep these people happy folks.

All riggers believe that. However, in the approx 25 years I have
owned a chute I have been told twice when a different rigger packed it
that the previous one had done it wrong. I had also had a helpful
rigger make a modification at his own initative. A rigger packing it
later advise me the mod was unapproved, violated the TSO
certification, and had to be removed.

So use a confident rigger and hope he actually is a good as he thinks
he is.
