View Full Version : Day 4 Central Calif. Soaring Club Spring Contest

The contest is over. We had beautiful post-frontal weather today after
a rainy evening. There were booming thermals all over the San Joaquin
Valley, marked by fantastic cloud streets. Some over-developement
early, but the air was drying out as the day progressed, and the
clouds got even better during the later afternoon.

Alex-
You forgot to mention the great Tri-tip dinner served up by the folks
at CCSC on Sat night. That was one giant hunk of grilled moo!
Thank you to all who pitched in to make this a great contest.

Larry,
Thanks for posting those contest pictures on the SSA photo gallery
page. I do notice
from your comments and pictures that you seem to have a strong
interest in the gastronomic offerings
that were available during the contest. We'll have to take that into
consideration
when planning the next contest! What do you plan on offering in this
area for the
region 12 contest? We're lucky in that the Harris Ranch Feed Lot is
just up the road
from Avenal. Not sure what dining opportunities they have out there
in Inyokern, maybe some rainbow
trout from up in the Sierras, or perhaps Frog Legs?

We have posted some pictures of the contest contributed by Larry
Tuohino, Scott Ellis and Harold Gallagher to the SSA
Results and Reports Photo Gallery page here:
http://www.ssa.org/sport/PhotoGalleryMain.asp?category=contest&id=2185
We also have some video from Day 4 posted on YouTube. The video has
some local scenes around the town of Avenal, the Day 4 pilots'
meeting,
and finally some video from the back seat of Morgan Hall's Duo Discus
while flying the Day 4 task under some great cloud streets and 13 kt+
thermals.

Alex-
You caught me emailing with my mouth full...actually based on my usual
mid-level placing at contests I have to be concerned about food, ie,
whether there will be any left by the time I get back from landing
out!
I have just recently started flying contests and have quickly realized
that the there is more to them than the score...they are really a
bunch of aviators gathering to have a good time with all the senses
(including taste) involved.
You betcha there will be something to chew about at the IYK contest.
