View Full Version : Contest Grid Spacing?

We have a small informal "contest" going on this weekend at Sky
Soaring outside of Chicago (http://skysoaring.com) and are laying out
the grid for about 20 gliders. The even gliders are in one line and
odd gliders in the other. We are about to start painting numbers on
the turf and said to ourselves, what should the spacing be?

What is the suggested minimum spacing from the nose of glider 1 to the
nose of glider 3?

Thanks, John

It depends on how much room you have. Not much room, then pack them
as close as you have to to get everyone in. Lots of room, increase
the spacing so late arrivals can get in position easily. For an
informal contest why even bother?

ASA contests sometimes have more that 20 gliders and we gave up using
an assigned grid years ago. We just put unballasted gliders (B class)
in front and ballasted gliders (A class) behind them.

More than one coat of paint is advisable.

We generally make it about half a metre.

YMMV.

Hi John,

I lay out our contest grid here at Caesar Creek each year, both
regionals and nationals. I use a 30' nose to nose spot.
