The ALOFT project: http://soaring.goosetechnologies.com/
is well worth a look even though much of the more interesting detail has
vanished since the spooks took an interest. This was a project to convert
a commercially available 5m carbon RC model sailplane into an unpowered
UAV that would be capable of autonomously finding and using thermals to
fly a preprogrammed task. They succeeded - see the documented results.

BTW, I think this is the project that New Scientist mentions as making a
5.3 hour flight.

For those unfamiliar, the picture is clearly Lake Pukaki and Mt Cook
in the distance.
