View Full Version : Commercial Glider Rating

Hi everyone, I'm currently a sport pilot with no other licenses and used to fly gliders a little as a kid when I was stationed in England. I've been thinking of getting my glider rating but had a question about the commercial glider rating. The SSA states:

Commercial Pilots-Glider must be at least 18-years of age, pass a written FAA examination, hold a Private Pilot license with 25 hours of flight time in gliders and 100 glider flights as pilot-in-command, or a total of 200 hours of flight time in heavier-than-air aircraft including 20 glider flights as pilot-in-command, 3 hours or ten flights training in a glider, and five solo flights in a glider and pass a flight test.

Does that mean that one must have a medical? What confuses me is that everywhere else it says Private Pilot-Glider. Am I looking to much into this and they just say private pilot license as a catch all for the different add-ons? The way I've interpreted it is that you do not need a medical to fly as a commercial glider pilot, however sometimes you seem to need to read between the lines when it comes to the FAA. If someone could give me some insight that would be great...or a simple yes or no will suffice :)
Thanks!

I did a commercial glider add on to a commercial power license and I have no medical. One is not required for any glider rating including instructor. We self certify that we are ready to fly.

I presume you have a Sport Pilot, Airplane rating.
You cannot go direct from sport pilot airplane to commercial glider,
unless yo have the prescribe hours in heavier than air, or light sport
aircraft. Complete a commercial glider written exam and complete a
glider practical exam check ride.

If you do not have the required power hours, you will need to complete
a private glider check ride first, accrue the required glider
experience for commercial, and the complete the required commercial
glider certificate requirements.

Yes, it is Sport Pilot-Airplane...here I am talking about specific wording and I wasn't even clear myself. Thanks for your replies I appreciate it!

I just reread 61.123(h), it does say you must hold must have at least
a private pilot certificate. Does not specify in which aircraft. You
may have to complete a private glider certificate before you can
complete the commercial rating.

Unless you have military flight time, you will need to obtain a Private
Pilot's certificate before getting your commercial. This PP certificate
can be in any category and class. For example, you could get a private
ASEL, then go to commercial glider. But you must have a private pilot's
license in SOME category before getting the commercial-glider.

In order to obtain the PP certificate, you MAY need a medical (depending
on the requirements for the category for which you intend to get the PP
certificate). However, a medical is NOT required for glider category
ratings, so if you decide to get your private-glider, then
commercial-glider, you will not need a medical.

It is possible to get a private glider certificate, and then later the
same day, the commercial glider certificate, if you pass the
tests.........I don't know if any instructors would give the sign offs
for that, or if any examiners would do the two tests...

Just because you have a Private Pilot Power license does not
automatically mean that you need a medical. A pilot with a Private SEL
license can fly a light sport aircraft without a medical.

Yes, *if* you did not fail your last medical.

Yes, and that pilot would be exercising the privileges of sport pilot
only...not private pilot privileges
A valid medical is required for private privileges (airplane)

Also, you need a medical to GET a Private Pilot-Airplane rating. The OP
indicated (I think) that he does not currently have a PP-ASEL rating. In
order to take the practical test for this rating, you need a medical.
Then after you pass your practical test if your medical lapses you would
then be eligible for sport pilot privileges only.

Do you have a reference to the FAR section that requires you to have a
medical to get a Private SEL license?
