Never heard of this engine. Haven't found a single reference to it on the
web so far.
Did it ever see the light of day ? Does anyone know its
specs/performance/history ?

Yes, I'd found this (and the link Robert mentions) but neither of them refer
specifically to a 'Panther' engine.

Carefully Reading the ad,
I don,t beleive there was ever a Fairchild engine called the Panther,

it appears that the copywriter is comparing the purr of the panther to
the Ranger engine's purr.

Yes. The spelling of the two words -- "Ranger" and "panther," as they
appear in the copy -- indicates that the first word is a proper name
denoting 'the only in-line, inverted , air-cooled engine in production in
America' while the second word is merely a noun used in an extended
metaphor, the name of an animal which shares many of the engine's
characteristics.
