A normal desktop will be resumed at the end of the cricket season.

For those playing at home, it's a bad one for Australia, we're getting our
arses handed to us.

Here's my desktop
Sorry that there's no aircraft, I like it clean and 'relatively' uncluttered.
And yes, I still run WinXP Pro, I have tried the other (later) MS 'Operating

My next OS will probably be Linux but the GUI will be optional.

Linux and X Window

Look ma! No crutches! No training wheels!

Of course, Linux offers desktops of staggering complexity, but I prefer
the spartan and the minimalistic. Here we see only three virtual
terminals, and using these I can be much more productive than any
GUI jockey in the world.

Actually, this image represents only 1/4 of the total desktop real
estate. Using X Window one can define areas up to 16x what is seen
here, but I do not require such vastness.

Try that with Micro$oft Windoze!

Hi Jeff,

when you want to switch to Linux you should take a look at Mandriva
Linux (theres a Live-CD named Mandriva Linux One, has also a Installer
to make a bootable USB-Memory Stick). The "draktools" (Menubased
Configuration for Graphic-Card, Sound, Printer, Fax, Firewall,
FTP-Server etc) are really comfortable and easy to understand. The
Hardware-Recognition is slightly better than the HW-Recognition of Ubuntu.

Downside is that the Packages (Programms, Libs etc) arent always the
newest, but therefore really stable and reliable.

As News-Reader for Mass-Download Binary Newsgroups i highly recommend
"Pan" which handles Multipart-Binaries and yenc Files, and for writing
to Newsgroups Thunderbird mainly because i dont like the writing Editor
in Pan :D

The GUI (KDE4, Gnome etc) should suit your Hardware, on an old AMD
Athlon 2Ghz i wouldnt recommend KDE4 or Gnome but LXDE or if you want a
lightweight but highly stylish Desktop "Enlightment" (E17).

Jens

Not just any RNAS - it's Rutland of Jutland returning to Engadine, reportedly
at the conclusion of his famous mission (that's the 1916 one, not the 'secret

Which reminds me, I've got a set of RNAS scans somewhere. I'll see if I can

Certainly do. We have to take responsibility for what happened to us
during the Ashes.

Cricket's a cyclic sport, we're going through the downside. There's a bit
of housekeeping to do, get rid of the hubris, clean out a few older players
(cough:Ponting) and administrators, much like England did after 2005.

Nasser Hussein must be laughing his head off, his one quotable moment was
that Australia's dominance was a bad thing for world cricket.

HI Peter,

Dave's on track with this one, it's a Comet 4 cockpit, based at the de
Havilland Museum.

Comment about the Caravell is interesting, as according to Wikipedia: "Sud's
design licensed several fuselage features from de Havilland, a company Sud
had dealings with for several earlier designs. The nose area and cockpit
layout were both taken directly from the de Havilland Comet". Plus, of
course, they both used Rolls Royce Avon engines.

I somehow doubt either of those two "C's" are likely candidates.

Thanks RiŠardo. I'd gone back as far as the VC10, but then a plate of
spag bol and having to work intervened. Don't know why I didn't think of
the Comet. It was obviously lot neater on the outside than on the
inside.

I've got a photo somewhere of John Cunningham with the crew of Canopus
standing in front of the aircraft at Hatfield during one of the last
Open Days there.

Shades of "Fate is the Hunter"

I'm surprised it doesn't have ash trays.

Probably, but I'm surprised that a pig can smell anything - over the smell
of .... pig.

Fascinating. That's the ex-HMS Warrior of 'Vampire on the rubber flight

On second thought, my other desktop might be more appropriate to this
group. Part of a personal collection belonging to a gentleman from
Casper. In a hanger at the airfield west of Casper that was a WW II
training base for B-17s.

I don't usually bother with wallpaper, much preferring a black background.
However, I thought I'd give this image a try for a few days.

Thank you for that. I saw the TSR2 in flight back in the 60s. I was on an
army exercise on Salisbury Plain at the time, and there was a "chase" 'plane
close by which, I think, was a Harvard - although the memory does dim with
time!

This one is not an authentic genuine one. One can recognize a bootleg
one, for the false order of the colours around the indicators : yellow
red green blue, instead of Windows'(c) red green yellow blue.
(Clockwise)

I saw the TSR2 hidden at the back of a hanger at Cranfield in 1974/75.
The story was that the government had ordered the prototypes to be
scrapped, but it was flown to Cranfield (School of Aeronautics) and
had its wing main spar cut through before being secreted away.

As I recall, Harold Wilson ordered a total destruction of the aircraft, plus
all the jigs and so on, making resurrection impossilbe.

He may have been right...

Helllo, where did that come from?

And I've just found the CD they're on - it had inconsiderately relocated
itself behind some furniture. And it's not RNAS at all, I'm afraid, but RN
after they got the FAA back in the 30s. Well, better than nothing. I'll
start posting them tomorrow.

An impressive array. There can't be too many people who have both Swordfish
and Phantom on their CV.
