View Full Version : Did Anyone Ever Buy a Glider HUD?

I was leafing through a back issue of Soaring at SSA's W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-
L online archive. Its fun to see what was happening 10-20-30 years
ago.

I then stumbled across a heads up display (HUD) for gliders. "Man", I
said to myself, "that is pretty cool."

Did anyone ever buy and use one of these? How well did it work? Why
don't we have one of these today?

I have a friend who did use one of these HUDIS back in the 90'. Het
said it was a fantastic variometer and final glide calculator (before
the GPS craze hit), but didn't comment about the readability.

There simply was not enough interest in the giding community to
warrant further development.

A variant for power planes has also been briefly on the market.

I have one in storage , but never flown with it. There was a frenchman who
had one in his Ventus and he seemed happy with it. Especially the vario is
nice. That time we were flying in Namibia, Africa and the light there is
extremly bright, but it still was usable apparently.
