Is there a way to permanently load in a way point, such as home base?
Thx in advance.

Use the outer knob to go to the WPT group of pages. Use the inner knob to
select the last page where you can enter the waypoint. You can also press
MENU to see the list of user waypoints. You can enter the point as a radial
and distance, two radials, or lat long.

You can also enter it graphically. Go to NAV page 2, the map. Press in on
the cursor knob. You should now have an arrow. Move the arrow to where you
want to make the point. While you are doing this, you can zoom or press the
clear button to change the declutter and zoom. When you are at the point
that you want to make a waypoint press ENT and you will create a waypoint at
the point. Note that you can play with inputing the name of another
waypoint such as a VOR in the appropriate field to get the VOR radial and
distance of the point.

Most of the Garmin mapping GPS receivers have a similar type function.

To get rid of the cursor, press on the knob again.

Just be advized that if you ever have the master software updated, you will
lose your User Waypoints.

I had RIPON and FISK in last year, but had the software upgrade this past
spring. Wiped out my User Waypoints...

I imagine if I ever get the WAAS and Terrain upgrades, same thing will
happen.

But it appears that if you want to mark the present position a quick way is
to press the inner knob to activate the cursor. The cursor should start at
the present position. Now press ENT to create the point.

Also, on the waypoint creation page, hit the CLR button when one of the
names of a waypoint for giving a radial reference is highlighted. You
should get P.POS

I have some tricks on using the 430 for navigation in the navigation section
of my book at www.cockpitgps.com. Essentially, use the map for situational
awareness and the data fields for precision. Configure the data fields to
show TKE, XTK, DIST, and WPT. TKE will tell you how many degrees to adjust
your heading in order to parallel the course and XTK will tell you how far
off course you are. The big deal is using the TRACK data (TKE is the
difference between DTK and TRACK). You can just fly the GPS with the CDI
like a VOR, but using the track information such as in TKE should make it
easier.

Hope this helps,

John Bell
