View Full Version : Airport names

Hi everyone-The thread on airport identifiers is getting a little long, so I
thought I'd start a new one. There doesn't seem to be any standards for
naming airports, except for what the local pols dream up.
JFK is obvious of course, and O'Hare is named after a Medal of Honor winner.
(Posthumously I believe) But what about the current trend for naming
airports after still living politicians. Ronald Reagan Naational,
for Washington National. Mineta International for San Jose Municipal. Yes
I know they called in International, but it always will be Muni to me.
Then there was the attempt to name San Francisco International (SFO) Joe
DiMaggio Field. Joltin Joe played his big league career with the NY Yankees.
He did marry Marilyn Monroe in the City. I could vote for calling it MM
International with a big picture of her over the entrance.
The airport itself is in San Mateo county, One of the two Bart trains to it
is marked "Millbrae." It wouldn't surprise me if some one proposes it be
called Williie Brown International as soon as he leaves office. (Da Mayor
now)
There must be a lot of other similar silliness out there.

Joe DiMaggio was a local boy. He was born in Martinez, California, his
family moved to San Francisco shortly after his birth.
I prefer airfields to be named for people with an aviation connection.

Yes I know. They finally named a playground after him.

I absolutely agree. Airfield names are a fitting epitaph for those
individuals who have made a significant contribution to aviation
through technical innovation and/or heroic deed. (What was the
reasoning behind Reagan Intl.? Somnambulant Intl. may have been just
as appropriate.)
I cringe every time I hear "John Wayne tower ..." broadcast. I prefer
to refer to an airport on the radio by its city name, or anything
other than the name of an actor. "Santa Ana tower" was used in the
'70s and still works fine for me. "Orange County tower" works too.
In the end, I suppose the responsibility for naming airports falls on
the shoulders of its owner.

Same way National Airport got named after. At least the Cape was a federal
facility. It was the republican congresses incessent medling in the local
agencies operation of the airport that caused the DCA debacle.

I don't even understand this statement, unless you're refering to the City
of Cape Canaveral.
The original Cape Canaveral, where early launches took place, was split.
The NASA side was renamed Kennedy Space Center. The Air Force side
retained the Cape Canaveral name (Cape Canaveral Air Force Station... part
of Patrick AFB).

I'm referring to Cape Canaveral, the land mass jutting out into the Atlantic
Ocean that was named Cabo de Canaveral (Cape of the Cane) by the Spanish
nearly 500 years ago.

Not long after President Kennedy was assassinated President Johnson decreed
that the NASA facilities on Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island would be
renamed the John F. Kennedy Space Center. But the previous name did not
contain "Cape Canaveral", it was just called the NASA Launch Operations
Center. Johnson also decreed that "Cape Canaveral", the geographic place
name, would be changed to "Cape Kennedy". A couple of months later the USAF
announced that Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex would be renamed Cape
Kennedy Air Force Station.
Nobody objected to renaming the NASA and USAF facilities for Kennedy, they
were federal property and the federal government could call them anything
they wanted. There was considerable objection to the changing of the
geographic place name, however. It took some ten years, but in the early
seventies the geographic place name again became Cape Canaveral, and the
USAF facility was renamed Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

If I recall correctly, JFK had something to do with the advancement of
space technology.

He did. I didn't say renaming the NASA facility for JFK was unjustified, I
think it was the proper thing to do. But it was wrong to change "Cape
Canaveral" to "Cape Kennedy".

Saw a good show on the program on iirc History chnl not long ago. They
showed film of the actual tests of the nuclear motors in Nevada. Kept having
catastrophic failures in the engine casings. Guess its a good thing they
gave it up along with the nuke powered bomber.
