View Full Version : Headphones For Passengers

Within the next few weeks, I'll be taking my first passengers aloft in
a Cessna 172. Although I have flown as a passenger without a headset
in the past, I can't really remember whether or not I had difficulty
communicating with others in the plane - it's been a while.

I've removed my headset occasionally during x-countries and, although
the noise doesn't bother me (and the cool air felt good on my ears!),
I'm concerned about others who might be more sensitive.

I'd like the passengers to be comfortable and able to hear what's
happening on the radio. I can rent headsets from the FBO, I believe,
but I'm not sure about availability.

Anyone have thoughts on the best way to handle this?

Another thought is to get some regular hearing protectors (about $20) and an
old set of headphones. Put the speaker from the headphones into the hearing
protectors (it's ok if the wire goes across the seal). That way they can hear
you (you may need an impedance matching plug). Then, they can use the regular
aircraft microphone (plugged into their microphone jack in the back) to talk to
you., Push to talk. It won't transmit from the back.

And a great excuse for upgrading your own headset and giving your current
one to the passenger.
