Three weeks ago I sent the FAA two bucks and now I have my new super
cool centennial certificate.

For whoever asked about them earlier, there is a strip on the back like
on credit cards for the airman's signature.

Here's my dilemma: I want to keep it but I will be taking more checkrides.
Say I take the commercial next year but instead of giving up my centennial
card, I hand in my old paper certificate. Will some Okie eagle eye spot
this and bust me, or can I keep the Wright Bros. one forever that way?

When I got my last certificate the DE asked that the FAA return the original
to me since it was an original issuance. I did not ask him to do this but
he thought I might like to have it since I had been packing it around since
1985. The original (with a hole punched in it) came back to me along with
the new certificate. I'm sure you could ask the same thing.

Why would you care? If you earn a Commercial in the future, the FAA
will issue you a new certificate anyway. Sure, they could change the
picture, but I don't see anything special about the picture now that
would indicate a change in 2004 or beyond.

I wish I'd known to ask for this. Surrendered my 1974 original in 2002 after
my instrument practical, got a xerox copy but the old one is gone forever.

Do not hand in the old paper certificate. It became void when you
received your new one. I doubt the FAA would be amused.

How do they tell the difference?

The issue date will be different on the newer certificate.

Certificates issued in 2003 have centennial of flight graphics. Neither you
nor I know what ones issued in 2004 or later will be like.

I don't think that having the Wrights on a pilot certificate makes the
graphics "Centennial of Flight" graphics. There is no reason that I see
as to why the FAA would need or even desire to change the certificate in
future years; for example, there is no reference to the "Centennial of
Flight" anywhere on the 2003 certificate, and it looks to me that the
Wright Flyer shares space on the certificate with a jet airliner.

I've not seen anything that says the old certificate is no good
anymore. When I renew my CFI I dread getting the new certificate. I
suspect they'll send 2 or 3 again like when they changed the SSN. My
wallet isn't big enough to carry 3 hard plastic certificates. Maybe
they'll learn how to pull all certificates on one card.
