That whole episode was a tragic expose of Chicago citizens though. I cannot
believe those people are this upset and willing to literally kill this guy
over a stupid ****ing BASEBALL GAME. What a bunch of morons.

I worked for (and with) the Chicago Tribune from '88 to '94. I can believe
this, and more.
Remember, Chicagoans are people that allow an elected official to destroy
public property -- and DON'T recall him.
Chicagoans rant and rave about horrendous traffic, while continuing to
support and allow toll-ways. (Imagine -- they stop 16 lanes of traffic to
collect forty cents -- and wonder why they have traffic jams!)
Chicagoans routinely sit in their cars for 90 minutes, in order to commute
20 miles.
Chicagoans are not the "best and brightest". The smart ones leave.

It wasn't that long ago, it was when the men's World Cup was held here
in the states, and his "transgression" for which he paid with his
life, was that he caused an "own goal", and the Columbian team lost to
the US. An own goal means that by accident, a defender puts the ball
in his own goal. It can be a deflection from a shot or a shanked
clearance kick or whatever. It doesn't matter how the ball gets in
the goal, it still counts.
Supposedly the man's assailant said to him "thanks for the own goal,"
and shot him.

Hmmm. So the Cubs haven't won a series since the original Mayor Daley was
in first grade. (He was born in 1902.) He must have started his nefarious
ways when he was six. years old...
Coincidence? It's not the "Meigs Curse" -- it's the Daley Curse!
It's obvious to me that the curse has simply followed the Daley family, and
will continue until their clan no longer controls Chicago politics.
Which means, in essence, that the Cubs will NEVER win the Series.

You're an idiot.
Daley's constituency is made up not of pilots, but of people that want
handouts, and people for whom his "machine" does favors. Pilots in Chicago
have no say because for every one of us, there are 25,000 of them. And
whenever its convenient, Daley plays the "class warfare" game like a good
Democrat does, taking full advantage of the very ignorant in order to stay
in power.
That's the "Chicago" way and one reason why this place has its reputation.

In the city itself, you mean for every Chicagoan who is a pilot there are
250,000 non-pilot citizens?
Besides the betrayal of Meigs, does everyone know about the "Rape of CVS"? CVS
is Chicago Vocational School. This was a public high school in the city where
aviation was also taught. In WW2, the Navy provided aircraft for training.(As
far as I've benn told, Dauntlesses, Devastators, Avengers, etc.) As late as
1974, the USAF supplied two T-33 aircraft for training. Since that time the
aviation program went derilict and the hangers on the school property were left
in disarray. Last summer, the last of the aircraft, parts and aviation tools
were removed. All that is left are the large double bay wood-roofed hangers on
school property. From the outside, you can see the two gantrys that the Navy
installed in WW2 for engine removal and run-ups. No one in Chicago cared about
this vocational training facility and let it completely run down. This
includes Jesse, Richie and all their henchmen. Thus Chicago has lost one more
aviation asset in a string of long losses.

Look, here's the bottom line: In ANY other city, in ANY other state, a guy
who sent bulldozers to rip up public property -- in the MIDDLE OF THE
NIGHT -- would have been arrested.
He would then have been put under medical observation, to ascertain his
sanity.
Why is it just "business as usual" in Chicago?

No, I wasn't aware of that.
How did Jesse and Richie explain this one to their constituents? It would
seem that vocational training would be a way up and out of the ghetto for
kids who weren't on the college track?
Isn't this kind of school PRECISELY what the Democrats are always

If that were true, then most public renovation projects would result in the
arrest of the presiding public officials (and of the bulldozer operators
themselves--if they were not acting on someone's lawful authority, then they
too were committing a crime). You usually have to bulldoze what's there in
order to build something else. Often there are people who preferred to keep
what was already there.
Daley decided to renovate a piece of public land whose usage was under his
administrative authority as an elected public official. There are sound
objections to the decision and to his implementation, but the idea that he
committed a crime (such as vandalism) is sheer fantasy.

Well, Gary, we've got a similar situation brewing in Coralville (sister city
to Iowa City).
The Mayor (and his cronies) have their hearts set on building a $60 million
dollar convention center, complete with a giant hotel, etc. The citizens of
Coralville are objecting to this, on the grounds that (a) it costs WAY too
much, (b) if there was a call for it, the Marriott's of the world would be
begging to build it with they own money, and (c) the Gubmint shouldn't be
competing with private business.
In fact, there is now a group of four people running for office (one
mayoral, three city council candidates) solely on the platform of "Stop the
Convention Center". Further, petitions have been submitted to the Mayor,
asking that the issue be put on the ballot as a referendum. (Sadly, I live
in Iowa City, and thus can't vote -- I'm sure you know where I stand on the
issue!)
Thus far, the Mayor has summarily dismissed these concerns, and the
petitions, and is going ahead with land fill, etc. (Is this starting to
sound familiar?)
If the Mayor of Coralville were to now take it upon himself to proceed with
demolition (there are publicly owned buildings on the site) -- especially if
he sent a wrecking company out in the middle of a Sunday night -- I do
believe he would be detained and observed.
But maybe that's just an Iowa thing -- we expect rational behavior from our
elected officials.

So you believe we live in a country where (except in Chicago) a public
official who initiates a renovation project is thereby subject to arrest and

sufficiently popular?

Well, I don't know about in the US, but in the UK it wouldn't
be up to one individual, the council would have to decide and
get at least some public opinion to help them decide. Planning
permission for the change of use would have to be sought.
I would guess it's the same there...but that's not what the
mayor did...he used the excuse of a terrorism threat or whatever
to destroy the airport without as far as I know, getting planning
permission.
