I know its an oxymoron, but a sensible bureaucrat would wait until this
year's batch of cranes had reached Florida before stopping the flights.

You know the FAA Motto: We're not happy until you're not happy!

This book may have been more effective than it's writers intended.

I know that as the CAA's motto but I should have guessed the FAA uses it
too: the FARs are even more unreadable than anything I've seen from the
UK's Civil Service. OTOH EASA could give both CAA and FAA lessons in
verbosity.

Reading the revues is a hoot. Half think its a spoof and the rest think
its good job seeking advice.

Oh crap! I'll fly from Albuquerque to wherever they're grounded (at my
expense) and complete the flight. Yes, I'm rated, no I won't expect
compensation. Let's just get the birds home.

This reminds me of the great blizzard of '97 when a humming bird was blown
from Arizona to Colorado and ended up on a window sill in Boulder. Talk
about local news coverage! I recall United Airlines was asked to fly the
bird back to AZ and they replied... "NO". Talk about a public relations
faux pas... All the other airlines in Denver were falling over themselves
to offer free transportation to the little hummer. He survived, BTW, and
even got a girl friend in AZ. News coverage continued until the bird was
released back into the wild with his new-found friend.

I just love blind adherence to rules with no personal judgment allowed.

Maybe your jumping to the wrong conclusion. The story I read was that
the *pilot* chose to abort the mission because he the pilot had a
concern about the legality of the operation.

the FAA inspector in charge of this one should be beaten (metaphorically, of course, this is not an actual threat on a federal employee - Geez)
