View Full Version : Kansas City Save-a-Connie Museum worth it?

We've got Wednesday off, and so do the kids. We're looking for a day trip
to a good museum somewhere in the MidWest.

One option is Oshkosh -- always a great time. The other option we're
looking at is the Downtown Kansas City airport's Save-A-Connie museum, also
known as the Airline History Museum (See:
http://www.airlinehistorymuseum.com/.)

Anyone been there? Is it worth a day flight to see?

Thanks!

Jay,

Just heard on the KC local news this morning that the Connie was leaving
today for LA to be involved in a movie shoot. So it won't even be there on
Wed. Haven't been to the museum yet but it's on the list of things to do.

Not large but interesting. Was well worth my 20 minute flight from St
Joseph a couple of times. They moved to their own hangar a couple
years ago, but I'm not clear about whether they have everything set up
at the new location yet. I was always fascinated by the cut-away large
radial engine where you can see all the internal parts. They are on
the SW corner of the airport now.

I dunno about the Kansas City Connie museum, but I do know
that there's an incredible museum involving the recovery
of a paddlewheel steamship from a field. The Steamship Arabia.
It fascinated me, it fascinated our friend and CFI Mike and
his wife, and it fascinated some friends of his who went there
on his rec. Well worth a day IMO.

I heard the FBO at Kansas City Downtown drove them right to
the Museum and picked them up.

IIRC it's called the "Steamship Arabia Museum" and it's near
the riverfront market, with a bunch of little stalls and
shops and a good brewpub/restaurant within easy walking
distance.

Saw them talking about the "Steamship Arabia" on Antiques Roadshow / Kansas
City.

The K.C. episodes aired the last few weeks.

Jay,

Have you been to the Space Museum in Hutchinson KS? It's a great place,
there's a decent restaurant on the field, and not too far from Iowa.

Have fun.

Nope, but it's on our "short list" of future places to go.

We DID stop in Hutchinson once, on our way west. It was the ONLY danged
airport in Kansas with gas on a Sunday. Man, they really roll up the
runways on Sundays out that way!

I agree totally. You'd never imagine the space artifacts you can find
in the middle of Kansas at the Cosmosphere. Apollo 13 is there.

Those are amazingly low prices for 100 LL. What's going on in Kansas that
the price is so different?

Sherman (TX) Municipal Airport $1.89 weekdays/$1.84 weekends. We get a
lot of North Texas traffic because of this.

The one thing I've noticed is that they are mostly city owned and
operated pumps and apparently profit isn't a factor.

Wow -- that statement is ironically hilarious, in light of my local
airport's fiscal struggles.

If Iowa City controlled the pumps, they'd be charging five bucks a gallon...
:(

It's nice to know that Kansans appreciate their airports.
