View Full Version : LXNAV V7 - Reviews?

Has anyone here been using an LXNAV V7 (or an LX Navigation 1606/166)
and can give some hands-on experience with this new vario (and sensor
array)?

The V7 is so new that there is precious little out there beyond mostly
worthless unpacking videos on Youtube and some specs and opinions from
those running soaring supply shops, but I hope that some folks flying
the southern hemisphere would be able to comment on it in actual use.

My anticipated use case would be

Volkslogger <-> V7 <-> (Bluetooth) <-> Dell Streak 5 running XCSoar.

and I would complement it by a somewhat poorly compensated, older PZL
mechanical vario. I would try to use the electronic (ASI/Static
based) compensation rather than TE, but it remains to be seen if the
static ports on my Std Cirrus are good enough.

Comments?

I have not flown with this instrument but have already delivered a few and
so far have had pretty good response and in fact orders for more from others
who have seen the V7's proud new owners

Have been setting one up to replace an L-NAV, not used in anger
yet but worked as indicated straight out of the box with
Volkslogger and HP38XX wired in.

UI appears so far to be friendly and straightforward with the
added advantage of control from Seeyou mobile.

Gav,

Once you've used it for a while, would appreciate any other factoids
including please:-

Is waypoint selection solely by PDA, and perhaps by flying a preloaded
task?
- or is there a waypoint database and selection facility in the V7?

Thanks,

Steve Thompson

David,

I have set up many V7s since they started shipping in December.
Oudie - V7, Nano - V7 - Oudie, Colibri II -V7- Oudie, Garmin GPS18 -
V7 - Minimap, PowerFlarm - V7 - Ultimate Le. NANO - V7 - Ulitmate
Le NANO - V7- PDA, Colibir II- V7- Minimap.

This is an expremely nice vario, and has many new features. I have
flown with it but not for long as the weather in Northern California
is not good. Erazem from LXNAV did testing in South Africa, his
philosphy on new products is to test extensively before selling a
product. I would suggest that you configure with components that
supply data at high baud rates. For full service, support and
seetup advice for you system please call.

there are no databases to install in the V7, it is the variometer (and a
lot more) but it exchanges this data < + > the connected GPS and PDA or

Thanks, everybody, for your responses. This looks good.

Hey all, I'm considering get an LX7 as well and wanted to get people's feedback on it. I just bought a new ship and will likely gut the panel as it is way cluttered, redundant and unergonomic and replace half of it. What I'm looking for is a nice audio vario w/ audio speed command, an averager and a netto function. I don't need any kind of navigation/GPS functions really as the Oudie takes care of that nicely. In my current glider I have an LX1600 connected to an Oudie which although was a complete pain in the ass to set up, once I got it up and running, it does that job nicely in a small 2 1/4" box, so I'm looking for something comparable.
First off, is the little integrated color screen really sunlight readable at max brightness? As in brighter than an Oudie sunlight readable screen (which I think is still slightly hard to see in sun).
About a connection to an Oudie/SeeYouMobile. Does it transfer things like MC settings, bugs, water, etc.... back and forth between the Oudie and the vario so you don't have to adjust MC setting twice on 2 different instruments? How about setting current waypoint in the Oudie transfer over to the vario such that you can get distance/altitude needed info on the vario?

Thanks,
Omri

I have flown with the V7 for two seasons now. Power Flarm - V7 - Oudie combination. Only have to set information once and it transfers back and forth. I have not tried to use the V7 for final glide just because I have not needed it.

The vario works well but takes some time to setup because you have so many options. I don't use the speed to fly much other than to fly faster or slower but not for exact speed. One of the best values available today for a simple system.

There is another variometer coming to the market. It might be the best value all around.

I flew with a V9 at the weekend, which is essentially the same display, but connected to an LX8080.
The screen is perfectly readable in strong sunlight. Far better than the CAI302 it replaced.
